How many of you have experienced exploitation in the U.S.?
I have had a few jobs in the U.S. that have used some very sketchy techniques to exploit workers.
Let me first talk about my days as an RA in the dormitory. We were told we had to work many extra hours. If we refused, they threatened our jobs. Since many of us were paying for college ourselves, we would have been put in automatic poverty. The management knew this and took advantage of this.
Next, I worked as a guide for the blind and teacher for the mentally disabled. This job paid a whopping $7.25 an hour and had benefits as long as you completed X amount of hours per month. But, they only gave 30 hours per month and if a client or two called in sick for a day, you would lose those hours. So, in order to keep your benefits, they said you must also work on Saturdays.
My point is that not only Korea exploits workers. It happens everywhere. The easiest time to exploit someone is when they need their job to survive. It seems as though the people with the most humane management skills, have suffered the most hardship. |

The most exploitative place I worked at was an Indian restaurant in Melbourne. The owner (from Delhi i believe) terrorised his female staff, which he'd imported from India. He held their passports etc and they were basically trapped there, working as much and as hard as he demanded. Also they didn't speak English so couldn't have got a different job anyhow, and the money they earned was still more than in India.
I ratted him out to immigration in the end. not sure what was done because i left the country soon after. |

Puzzling. You flamed me when I posted about my bad hogwon, and you posted that you are an illegal teacher. Now you want to criticize working in the US? Are you a hogwon owner? |

Sorry to disappoint you wylies, I am not a flamer. And yes, I am a hogwon owner, at least partially. Is there anything wrong with that? |
