A lot of these places can't even be called schools, but more like day care services where the kids may pick up some English at times.
Do you think that places like this should be shut down?
Cheers

They're a waste of time as long as it's all about money. |

I did have another choice, but when I pushed the submit button somehow it didn't show up. Hmmmm
The other choice was
Well, they hired me. What does that say?
Cheers

There are some out there that take education seriously out there (keyword = SOME) but you have to look for them. |

Let's call a duck and duck here:
If hagwons wern't a bunch of half-arsed daycares pretending to be schools, most of the foreigners here wouldnt have jobs (Myself included). They'd be filled up with real teachers and not a bunch of jerks with B.A.s and a student loan to pay off.
Face it. This is a money-making industry that has little or nothing to do with education and everything to do with profiting from parental fear. Hagwons are parasites and we're all benefiting from that. We have no right to be all holy about it. |

I agree Will! But some teachers are real teachers and they're being shafted. |

It is sad to see a person with teaching skills and a love of kids being slowly ground to death here. But then again, we're all guilty. |

I fail to see how if a foreign teacher allows himself to be reduced to nothing more than a babysitter, how is that not his fault?
In my experience, I get total and complete control over my classes. From books to subjects to how fast we move along. If I convert the class into a daycare I have only myself to blame.
Again, it's a poor craftsman who blames his tools (or in this scenario, a poor teacher blaming the school). |

There are some good hagwons out there, some very good ones in fact.
But, I have to say that a fair number of them should be either shut down or revamped and shaped up.
This would require more regulation of the industry. |

Yes, I admit it. I am a poor craftsman.
I am probably the worst person in the world to be teaching kids in a hagwan setting. But I needed money, and at the time, no one else would hire me. Any attempts that I made to try and improve things were either totally ignored or sabotaged.
You have never worked in a place like this. If you had, you would do one of 2 things. You would have quit, or you would have come to agree with my opinion .
Since I need money more than my pride right now, quitting is not an option.
It's very easy to sit there and tell the world what you would do, when you have no idea what this place is like.
So I repeat, Well, they hired me. What does that say?
Cheers

to get the final option in your poll you need to have one blank option. Just click the add option button one more time. |

Then again, you're the super-teacher who earns about twice what everyone else in Korea does and has roses thrown in front of him wherever he walks. Your hagwon/school was smart to realize how valuable you are to the industry as a whole, and thus are willing to let you do whatever you want.
And we're all certainly lucky to have you share your maginificence with us poor craftsmen.
But lets put aside my sarcasm for a minute: Is it possible you dont have any problems at your school simply because they'd do anything to keep you from talking? |

Well, yes. Except that it's been more than one school that's offered up the currency.

Too many people on this forum would blame the grass for dying after not watering it all summer. It's the weatherman's fault for not bringing enough rain, and there was nothing they could have done to save the grass.

Actually, no. I had completed a year of work at my current school on January 31, but I've stayed on a couple extra weeks while the new guy gets his visa processed. I've started working for the government now. I am part of the heat that will come down on your operation!
Before that, I worked at a school in Ansan with no major issues except for the Australian who quit after one day to move into a bar, then on Payday a month later demanded his full salary despite never working. Great humour for all.
The only problem I had at my current school was when I started. Prior to my starting, they went through five teachers in 3 months. Because of that, the Korean staff was indifferent to me because they assumed I would be gone in a couple weeks as well, plus the previous teachers were mostly babysitters instead of teachers. Since then, things have much improved. |
