Some of you might find this story interesting (some may not Wink ). I've been reading Dave's to get the low down on ESL in Korea before I get there in a few months. I've noticed a lot of stories about how much of a pain it is for ESL teachers to break their contracts if they are being treated poorly, sick, or just need to leave for a legit reason. From what I've read on these boards there is also a new public blacklist for teahcers who do break contracts and pull runners. I couldn't help but chuckle when the whole Malkin saga started. Here is a link from www.tsn.ca detailing how Malkin is breaking his contract

Here is a link to the full Malkin saga for those who don't follow hockey.

Dude, Evgeni Malkin pulled a runner 10 days after he signed an almost 2 million $ contract. I read that then I come on here and see someone asking how to go about doing the same thing, only the contract is 2million won. That struck me as funny for some reason...maybe it was late when I made the op Smile

Uh, he was followed home by big men in a dark car and signed the contract under those circumstances. Maybe his lawyer will try to have the contract voided. The FIRST opportunity he had to get away was when they left Russia for a training camp in Helsinki a week or so after.

There's no sign he ever wanted to sign that contract. he has been saying ALL SUMMER in several interviews that he wanted to go to America in the fall and play for the Penguins (and make a ton more money before long, plus endorsements).

The Russian employer comes off looking worse than a bad recruiter and visa-holding hagwon hell boss.

But yeah, 2 million dollars, 2 million won, disappearing a couple of weeks after signing, sounds like an interesting parallel to midnight runners among Korean ESLers.

I thought of the Malkin parallel as well.

Similar things happen here. I had my school (that was going broke) come into my apartment on a friday/pay day, that they weren't going to pay me on. They took my passport, because they thought I was going to leave the country. I also know they came into my apartment at least two other times.

I had a friend that worked for a school that went belly-up and in her search for jobs she was presured and threatened by one manager that he would report her and have her deported if she didn't sign his contract.
