...does anyone care? Well, an MDP lawmaker certainly does, as that otherwise useless rag the Herald tells us:

Lawmaker makes case for 'Corea'

I like the last paragraph:

"The issue of changing the 'K' to a 'C' is never petty, divisive or narrow-minded to Koreans, and it is up to us to see how far we can go," Kim contended."

Well after krossing Corea it's time to go to Central Asia to klimb Catmandu, then ride a kamel in Cuwait, use my kamera in Cenya and then paddle a kanoe in Cazakhstan! Smile

I really don't care one way or the other. Korea or Corea?

Usually romanized with a "C"? What about those romanized with a "K"?

Are Korean law makers going to start changing English spellings around the world before they can even get their own local romanization down pat?

Japan changed it so it would come first alphabetically? How about that the transliteration of K/Corea, adopted into Japanese romanization because they don't use a hard "C"?

No, probably not petty or divisive but I don't think this qualifies as a legitimate political issue at the moment. Aren't there plenty of other things to be working on?

Finally, "as we move toward a unified nation..." Be honest, how close are we? Think the North Koreans share the same views on C vs. K? This is nothing but political arrogance and irrelevance.

Speaking of which, I loved going to places like Pusan, Taegu, and Taejeon.. but hate going to Busan, Daegu, and Daejeon.. the latter names suck!

The thing is if they did ever consider actually changing it to 'Corea' then years later they'd probably look back at the great times they were 'Korea' and what a legency that was..

Its true though that in Spanish/Portuguese.. it is Correa.. kind of just rolls off your tounge like diarhea.

Nice.

Well, I think Mr. Cim needs to reflect for a while on his own name, before he starts trying to change his country's name.

Zzzyfer, you crack me up. Laughing

guess we need some cimchee to go along with this discussion.

Actually, isnt' the hard "gee-ut" sound inbetween a g and a k? So, it shouldn't be an issue of Korea and Corea. It SHOULD be a debate about Korea or Gorea.

I vote for Gorea.

Corea?!?
Why the hell not? If they really think it's somehow going make a difference, hold a referendum and let K/Coreans decide.

If Cambodia could call itself Kampuchea for a while, and Burma could switch to Myanmar, East Pakistan to Bangladesh, Zaire to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Greenland to Kalaallit Nunaat, British Honduras to Belize, Ceylon to Sri Lanka, Siam to Thailand, N. Rhodeisa to Zambia, Dahomey to Benin, etc. who are we to question what a nation chooses to call itself?

Sure it's a stupid waste of time, but so is arguing about it ad nauseum- a referendum would finally put the issue to rest (or throw the country into another civil war! Koreans vs. Coreans! Laughing ) Personally I think that, given the new Romanization, "Gorea" would be a valid third option.

I'd like to write more but I'm rather busy these days spearheading the movement to change "Canada" to "Aacanada"...

ENGLISH ANAL-RETENTIVE PEOPLE TAKE NOTE: (I am one of them by the way!)

It's "Corea" 100%, and I will tell you why.

It is purely a matter of English and it's rules.

Soft C words almost always have an e, i, or y following them.

Hard C words almost always have an a, o, or u following them.
(Cat, Cot, Cut)

If you want a "K" sound and follow it with an e, i, or y, you should use a K instead of a C.
(Ken, Kin, Kyte)

So, it should be Corea for that reason. Because it is the law of English.

Appropriate enough, but the aim here is to have the country listed at the top of every alphabetical list of nations; I'm currently engaged in a battle to the death with the "Aaacanada" campaign- those losers don't understand the meaning of the word 'overkill'.

I was under the impression that just about every rule in the english language could be broken. which is why its so *beep*ed up. IT's also one of the reasons why some koreans don't shut up about korean being the most scientific languages in the world.
