Well, he's 30 years old and he won his 12th major today (PGA). I was reading an article on MSNBC today about how he compares to the other greats in sports. The writer was saying that Woods will probably surpass other sports icons like Ali, Jordan, Gretzky, Joe Montana and even Babe Ruth by the time he's done. I'm a huge golf fan and a also a fan of Tiger. However, I think it's really hard to compare greats from different sports, especially team sports vs. individual sports. Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone had any thoughts.

Compared with his peers, Tiger is the best. 12-0 if leading going into the final round!! Now that's cool under pressure. Mickelson, Els, Garcia, Sing are nowhere near that good, and they all know it.

Now if he played with Nicklaus in his prime, that's a different story.

He doesn't impress me. For a black guy he has no soul. He sold it to Nike. Whether he's good or not, I don't care because he's a *beep*.

Tiger is awesome. I think his speech after he won the Open last month really proved that he isn't just a machine. The loss of his father hit him hard and I think everyone who heard his speech was in tears.
He's already one of the greatest sportsmen ever and he's still got another ten years of fantastic golf to play.

Who would even aspire to be an icon? You know, I look at that tired pop-up reminding me "There are unused icons on your desktop. Click here to flush them for all Eternity" ... or some such thing, I can only stop and think, man, that's sad.

Tiger never asked to be an icon. His desire was to be the best golfer in the world but not for fame and fortune.
Read some of the biographies about his life before becoming a pro. It's inspiring, the way he put up with racism and the death threats associated with it. He's an inspiration.

Sports icon? Like somebody people look up to? I just don't think enough people care about golf for any golfer to be the greatest sport icon ever. I mean, you think about Muhammad Ali going out in the ring and putting his @ss on the line and knocking dudes out, and then you think about Tiger Woods putting on his pressed slacks and playing a round of glorified lawn bowling, it just doesn't compare.

To me, nobody's gonna top Muhammed Ali because he was a great athlete and he was a fascinating person outside of the ring. If he had never boxed and round and had simply become an activist he'd still have been famous.

He's a golfer, yes. But he's also a much better role model than 90% of athletes in other sports.
I for one, would rather my son grew up aspiring to be like Tiger, than wanting to be a boxer getting his head beaten in.

MJ is still the greatest sports icon and will be for a long, long time. Who else is recognized simply by his initials or his silhouette?

Well we have different ideas what a role model is then.

I do not think pro athletes should be portrayed as role models at all. It is not their role or place.

Tiger plays a rich mans sport and makes most of his money off of endorsement contracts.

He is also tempermental and demeaning to media at times. Sure he is not as abrasive and toxic as Barry Bonds but he is still a golfer.

I'm voting for Ali as the world's greatest sporting icon.

Tiger Woods is just a name to most people - I don't know a thing about him other than he's good at golf, and is sponsored by Nike, and frankly I could care less about either.

Ali stood for more than his sport, and his personality, and social conscience mean more to me than anyone who is living their life as a logo.
