Let me make this PERFECTLY CLEAR:

I have heard good things about several different hagwons here on the island. (I would easily recommend several.) And I've been here since 2002.
So I know what I'm saying when I say...
I heard nothing but bad things from the Wonderland in Gohyeon, the city centre sort of, for the island.
I even know why they are looking for a new teacher, and it ain't good. |

Having repeated all that....
Wonderland is a Huge franchise chain. Some are good, most are on the blacklists. They are ALL different.
TALK to MORE THAN ONE of the current staff via e-mail ( when the boss isn't watching/reading over their shoulder ) about conditions at that particular hakwon.
The usual list of questions applies.
Salary: on time, deductions, overtime (do you actually get it?)
Holidays: when, how, blocks or individual days, who chooses when?
Medical/pension: yes (for real or just mentioned in the contract but non existant?
Classes: how long, how many per day/week/month.
Housing: type, size, costs, extra fees (there is no such thing as a free apartment, you pay for utilities and maintenence fees).
Anything that you think is important for your "quality of life issues" like shopping, supermarkets, other consumer facilities.
How are the staff?
Remember that many Wonderlands do NOT adhere to the contract. BE SURE TO ASK!!!!
Good luck. Personally, I would suggest that you try again and give them a wide berth. |

ANSAN WONDERLAND
EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT FOR TEACHER
Labor contract
This EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT has been made this on _________, 2006 between _Ansan Wonderland_(hereinafter referred to as the "Employer") and ___________ (hereinafter referred to as the "Teacher"), a citizen of ________ under the terms and conditions set forth below.
Both parties agree on the following terms and conditions:
CLAUSE 1 (APPOINTMENT)
a. The employer agrees to employ the teacher during the period stipulated herein.
b. The teacher agrees to accept the employment and will work in his/her full capacity for the school.
CLAUSE 2 ( PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT )
_______, 2006 ________, 2007
Employment officialy commences upon issuance of an E2 Visa from Korean Immigration Officials. It begins on your "issue date" and ends on your "expiry date." For your protection, it would be beneficial to have contractual language stating, "The employee shall not work for as well as participate in any work related activities until the employee has been issued an E2 Visa from Korean Immigration Officials."
CLAUSE 3 (THE EMPLOYERS RESPONSIBILITIES)
a. The employer and teacher are equal individuals working together to provide quality English instruction under the terms stated in this contract.
b. The employer will honor the terms and conditions of employment for the teacher as stated within this contract.
c. The employer will guarantee the teacher 2.0 million won for 120 hours(equal to 180 classes) every month.
Hagwon teachers generally work 6 classes per day that are 50 minutes in length. They do have some breaks included that are 5 minutes between each class to collect their thoughts and gather teaching materials.
If you don't have contractual language specifying how long your classes are, then you will be working every minute on the hour without 5 minute breaks for organizational purposes according to (c).
CLAUSE 4 (THE TEACHERS RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES )
a. During the terms of this Agreement, the teacher must cooperate and comply with the instructions and disciplines of the school. Assisting the Supervisor he/she must carry out assignments as directed by the employer. The Supervisor will be responsible for establishing and communicating the Standards of Performance as related to the duties stated in this contract.
b. The teacher must have adequately prepared for the classes in advance.
How long do you have to prepare in advance for?
c. At all times during the terms of this contract, the male teachers should wear ties and the female teachers will wear dresses or dress pants in the school unless otherwise instructed.
d. The teachers work will include the following:
①. Teaching of English language (Target students ages: 5 to 15)
②. Development of educational programs and materials
③. Curriculum design and implementation
④. Indoor and outdoor classroom activities for/with students
⑤. Grading and assessment of students: Your grades are unlikely to make much of difference. Hagwon owners want to make money, and there's nothing wrong with that objective. If you give low marks to a student you may be encouraged to "change" your grading style. Omit #5.
⑥. Student counseling or evaluation I believe it's the bosse's responsibily or another Korean Teacher's to counsel the students due to the language barrier. I would also get some clarification on evaluations. Are they written or verbal? How often are they?
⑦. Attending at teachers meetings, workshops and parents meetings
You should be paid overtime for workshops as well as parents meetings if they are ever outside the established working hours in your contract. If they don't want to pay you overtime, then find another school to work at.
⑧. Other related activities Clarification on this
CLAUSE 5 ( SALARY )
The payment of the salary is to be made on 5th of the following month.
Attendance at scheduled staff meetings and workshops is mandatory and not considered as teaching time.
Teaching time = paid time.... This is not acceptable I wouldn't fight staff meetings too much, but you should get paid overtime for workshops. They cannot force you to work overtime hours with or without pay.
CLAUSE 6 ( WORKING HOURS )
a. During the term of this Agreement, the teacher should work in cooperation with the Supervisor from Monday through Friday.
b. The employer cannot guarantee his/her requested teaching schedule.
What are your working hours? (shoot for 6 hour shifts) ex. 3-9
How long is each class?
CLAUSE 7 (TRANSPORTATION)
a. Round trip economy airfare is provided with the one-year contract from the teachers nearest airport to the international airport in Korea and transportation from the airport to the teachers residence in Korea. Upon completion of this contract, the teacher will be provided with a return ticket.
b. If the teacher leaves the school before his/her contract period ends, the school will not pay for his/her return ticket.
c. If the teacher leaves the school prior to completing six (6) months period of this contract for any reason, the teacher must reimburse the school the cost of the ticket paid by the school or the school may deduct the equivalent amount from the teachers last months pay.
CLAUSE 8 ( TAX )
The teacher will pay tax according to the Korean tax law. (3.3% of income)
3.3%
You can check taxes on the website below. 3.3% isn't accurate.
http://nts.go.kr/front/service/refer_cal/gani/refer_gani_eng.asp
CLAUSE 9 ( MEDICAL INSURANCE )
a. The teacher will be covered by medical insurance under AIG policy.
You should stick with the NHIP (National Health Insurance Plan)
Employer deducts 2.24% from your monthly salary and pays to NHIC
Employer pre-pays a 3 month lump sum payment to the NHIC
NHIC=National Health Insurance Corporation
Lump sum payment (2.24% x your monthly salary x 3) paid every 3 mths.
Amount deducted from your monthly salary should be specified in the event of any contractual dispute.
b. Half of the insurance premium will be paid by the Employer and the other half by the teacher. (For reference, the current insurance premium rate is 1.5 % of the monthly salary)
CLAUSE 10 ( VACATION & HOLIDAYS )
a. The teacher will be allowed for national holidays (14-15) and vacation (10) that are indicated in a yearly academic calendar.
CLAUSE 11 ( ACCOMMODATIONS )
a. The school will provide the teacher with a single furnished accommodation.
b. Furnishings provided by the employer include: television, refrigerator, washing machine, bed, kitchen table, chairs, two-burner gas hot plate, and a telephone
(airconditioner)
c. Selection of the apartment will be made by the employer.
d. The cost of monthly service, utilities, and telephone charges for the accommodations will be paid by the teacher. In the case of a shared apartment, the cost will be shared by the roommates
Say no to shared apartments and make it very clear to them!
e. For the first four months, the Employer will withhold a deposit of 100,000 Won each month, in order for the employer to pay utilities, telephone charges and possible damages which may have occurred in the last month of the teachers contract.
No to deposits....
f. Any balance due the teacher after all bills have been paid will be transferred to the teachers account in his/her home country within two months after the termination of the contract.
CLAUSE 12 (SEVERANCE PAYMENT)
Upon completion of this contract, the teacher will receive 2.0 million won.
This payment will be made at the time of completion of the contract period.
CLAUSE 13 ( DISMISSAL OR VOLUNTARY RESIGNATION )

b. The employer agrees to give the employee 20 working days notice in the event of dismissal. However, in the case of a teachers criminal behavior or misconduct, he/she will be dismissed from employment immediately with no warning or notice.
Korean Labor Laws state 30 days
c. In the event the teacher resigns from employment, he/she can do so giving 20 working days notice to the employer.
30 days.....
d. In either case of dismissal or resignation before completing the contract term, the teacher will NOT receive the severance payment in accordance with Korean Labor Laws.
CLAUSE 14( GOVERNING LAW & JURISDICTION )
a. This Agreement is governed by the law of the Republic of Korea.

I'm not an expert but I would advise staying away from wonderland contracts. I have heard BAD things about the company.
try Gia consulting or Worknplay or something like that. |

AND I forgot to add above in my previous post... you will work 180 classes for the SAME money as another teacher at any other hakwon working 120 classes per month.
A 3rd level (lowest level, no credentials other than a BA/B.Sc and no experience) foreign teacher in the public school system teaches 88 classes per month for just 200k per month less (but with the afternoon "extra" classes will actually make 2.2 mil for about 26 classes per week.
You teach 60 classes per month for free + unpaid administrative work and all the extra crap they throw in.
Keep looking and don't look back. |

Lets not forget that 180, 200, 300, or whatever number of classes, cannot be used for comparison with other schools because (drum roll please...) classes are different lengths. I teach 25 minute classes and about 55 of them per week. Yea I teach 220 classes but that's not 100 extra classes for free. Please re-take basic math if you can't compute the logic......contract stated 120 hours = 180 classes... |

Wonderland schools brought out a new calendar. On it they highlighted Saturdays as working days. Wonderlands are M-F only. Now, Saturdays are included as workdays. It was really very clever because now teachers have an additional number of anti-holidays. If you take a vacation from Thurdays to next Tuesday, Saturday will be taken as one of your vacation days. It's quite insidious.
Nevertheless, as a first year or second year beginner teacher I would recommend a few of the Wonderlands, mostly because they tend to be consistant with pay.
I worked at Wonderland and enjoyed it. There were lots of young folk who enjoyed each other's company. It was fun and friendly.
I didn't feel like a prisoner, as those two naive girls did back in the 90's.
The above posts are correct in that you'll be working quite a long day. However, I have yet to find any hakwon, even these evening ones, in which the teacher is not working the ass off and expected to do a lot of extra work. I did one of those 3pm to 10 pm jobs and it was horrific. I hated it.
Wonderlands have field trips and variety with the little kids. These night time schools ones have little variation night to night.
Classes were 40 minutes long.
Even 180 was manageable. |

OK, let me spell it out....
You can work your 220 classes and you are working your tail off.
Even at 30 minutes per class you are still working 6600 contact minutes.
at 40 minutes you better be making a hell-of-a-lot of overtime (8800 contact minutes = 147 hours of contact time per month)
120 hours of full contact time (180X40 minute classes) = 7200 contact minutes.
That is one hell of a lot of busting your ass off at 180 x 40 (or 220) minute classes per month for the same money AND lets not forget the prep time that you get to do as well. Prepping for 180 classes is double what I have to spend prepping for 92 classes.
I (and every other public school teacher that I know of) teach 22 X 40 minute classes per week. (~92 x 40 minute classes (3680 contact minutes) per month) for the same or better money and benefits.
If we teach any more (more contact time) we get an additional 20k won per 40 minute class.
Wonderland SUCKS. It is right up there with SLP, KIDS CLUB and the Herald schools for extra long hours and poor conditions.
Apples to apples.
