I'll just say this. Working in a country is vastly different from going there as a tourist. Ever notice how the majority of people who say Thailand is better than Korea are giving their tourist experiences and not working experiences? They all say it's a great place to vacation, but after living there for a year and working you might have a rather different impression.

That's correct. So the best way to judge the matter is to ask people that have taught in both Korea and Thailand. At least for the people I know, they all said the money was better in Korea but the lifestyle was better in Thailand. Seems to be what people have been saying here as well.

So anyone gonna answer my question about how long will 10 million won last in Thailand (outside of Bangkok) as long as you don't go all out every night?

If you budget yourself, 10 million won will last for quite awhile. Possibly a whole year or more (not counting visa runs though) if you rent an apartment and stay put instead of travelling around and staying in hotels. Some Thai people live on $300US or less a month (though this is not a great way to go).

Realistically I'd say anywhere from 3-6 months depending on how much you travel and how much fun you want to have with your money.

This is assuming you're outside Bangkok, btw. Bangkok is an easy place to blow a lot of cash quickly.

Some *foreigners* live in Thailand on $300USD a month. Many (most) Thais live on less than that. 10million won is plenty of money to spend a comfortable year in Thailand without even working at all, but no, you can't live like a playboy on that.

That's US$10 per day including lodging.

I went to Bangkok about a year ago with around 400,000 Japanese yen (about US$4000) and spent it all after 6 weeks (and I was even staying at a friend's place for free)... that's nearly a grand a week (we went a bit nuts though, mind you)... But if you're living there and don't have crazy nights out everyday drinking at fancy clubs etc. and don't shop too much you can of course live on a fraction of that amount.

That's US$80 per day not including lodging.

Quite a difference. Besides "crazy nights" and "fancy clubs", what exactly does someone do that costs them US$80/day in poor Thailand?

You got me... Wink

I mostly blew my money eating really good (and expensive) dinners every day and drinking a lot of imported alcohol (not a huge fan o' the Chang I'm sorry to say) - gotta look after them tastebuds, know what I mean? Shopped quite a bit towards the end too, but I actually needed most of the stuff I bought (clothes etc.). Also, I was mostly in Bangkok so everything cost more. I don't really plan on spending that much next time I go.

True enough. Some Thai's live on mere dollars a day, though I doubt a foreigner (not even speaking Thai) could pull it off (or even want to). I figure in BKK $1000 or so a month is a good amount for a foreigner to live pretty well on. I wouldn't bother staying for long on much less.

For comparison sake, an average EFL teaching job in Bangkok is only about $800-900 a month, not including rent, visa runs, or all the other perks you get in Korea. Teachers on that kind of salary live comfortably, but not extravagantly.

I met a Canadian teacher in Bangkok who only worked part-time and was only living on about $300 a month. He claimed that was enough for him. He split food and rent with his girlfriend, and didn't have such fancy luxuries as hot water, or god forbid, air-con.

I think I'm hitting Indonesia and Bali for my vacation. Thailand is nice but is not as cheap as it once was.

In my opinion, I found Bali's scenery more beautiful than Thailand's, though by a small margin.

Yeah, I think it would be impossible to live like a Thai person. Not that we aren't capable of it, but Thais are incapable of letting us live like one.

Nearly every single Thai person you meet will just naturally assume you're more than capable of paying for their way or being overcharged. Not only that, but the living conditions are different. Sure Thais can live on less, but they also live in other conditions - not generally as a single person living alone in his own apartment all by himself (which is what most foreigners would want to do) and on and on.

Regarding spending good $ a day.. easy to do in Thailand! When I was just there, I averaged US$6-10/meal for myself.. just so many good restaurants around.. and the idea of eating street noodles three times a day for here on out forever and ever is a nice dreamy thought.. but easier to say you'd do than actually do, considering there are so many alternatives and options.

Agreed. I also like living in a country where the girls are not only after my money or a way out of Thailand.

I lived in Thailand 3 years (cheap) but when it came time to get back to work, Thailand was not an option. I can't imagine putting on a tie in 100 deg heat all year long. It's bad enough in the Korean summer. Work in Korea, vacation in Thailand.
Also, I've heard people say before that Thailand has 'nature'. Well, English teachers don't work in the nature, they work in Bangkok. Bangkok is a great city, but for parks and outdoor activities, Seoul is much better than Bangkok.
I really do love Bangkok and hope to retire there, just wouldn't want to work there.

I'm writing this from the airport in BKK en route to Seoul.

My advice: DO NOT live/work in Korea unless absolutely necessary.

Trust me on this one.
