I'm good with keeping the K in Korea. I'd get confused if things started to change.

Is it more phonetically correct to use a C?

Buljasso, agreed Korea is not an anglo word, but wasn't the theory being put forward that C would correspond more closely to ENGLISH phonetics?

Somebody also needs to remind Mr. Cim that changing Korea to Corea will still put Corea behind China in an alphbetical listing. We can't have that, now can we?

I used to have an ex-girlfriend named Corea (pronounced like 'Corey")-- so I have to vote for the "K".

This issue was not discussed in Korea until the World Cup. Suddenly some people got upset that Japan was listed first. My money says this is a case of projection.

Besides, what country gets to change their name in foreign languages?Cambodia became Kampuchea in their own language. Burma became Myanmar in Burmese. In Korean, Korea is Daehanminguk, not Korea. IF Daehanminguk changes its name to Corea in Hangook mal, then I'll go along with it. Otherwise it is just pandering to their inferiority complex vis a vis Japan. Ain't my problem.

This is exactly what I think about the East Sea/Sea of Japan issue. Korea does not get to make up new English words and names because it is not their language. They can try, but we have no reason to accept it. The day I call that body of water the East Sea in my language is the day I start calling it the Ϻ/IlBonHae in theirs.

Actually, I've been thinking about circulating petitions back home to get the the Korean name of America changed from "̱/Me-Gook" to something else. It sounds too much like I am using a racial epithet to refer to myself and my country. And what's up with that Chinese character(ڸ)? It looks like a frickin' centipede! I will immediately write to my Congressman to make sure that he takes up this important issue.

I think Son Duereo! is on to something important here. Maybe we way-good sarams should get petitions going to DEMAND Koreans stop calling the US 'Mi-gook' when they speak Korean. That puts us BEHIND both Korea and Japan in the alphabet! Koreans tell me it is the Chinese name for the US, but I suspect that it was a Japanese plot during World War 2.

I find it offensive no matter what the source. It always sounded like Tarzan was saying he was a Vietcong.

Yeah, but it's always "United States of America" for anything important (Olympics, Miss Universe, Hated Decadent Western Nation of the Week etc.) not "America" so it doesn't help much.

A Corean priende tolde mi that Mi-gook meanse beautifule kountry. Thatse fine wij me.
Ase for je C/K jing.... First, they should stop calling Bush Bushi. Then they should stop calling McDonalds Macadonaldse. Then they should change their alphabet so that zoo is not joo and zebra is not jebra. After they do this, then I will consider calling them Corea.
