OP, yes, the recruiter was a tool for calling so late(early). I've had one like that myself a long time ago...that was when I started putting the appropriate KST times on my cover letter and resume and instructed contacts to call within the times given...not many calls at inappropriate times since then, at least not from potential employers. Based upon what you said, I would've likely hung up on the person after I tried to figure out what was going on...same as you. Yes, when you are here, you may get a few unwanted calls at inappropriate times as Koreans don't always go by that 9am-9pm or 10am-10pm politeness rule. If that kind of thing becomes a problem, shut off both your home and cell phone. And, yes, it is noisier than a lot of places back home(esp when you're from a backwater like me). However, you will adjust or you will leave. Don't get too discouraged. Give it a go if you wish. Your accent should be fine.

Thanks for all the positive and supportive comments. I was wrong to generalise about the board but some of those early posts really annoyed me. Thanks again Smile

@ corroonb

Re my previous post and your response:

Calling a recruiter stupid is hardly indicative of rage. I don't believe I used a single expletive in my two initial posts. Regardless I was not really angry, more confused and irritated.

It was wrong of me to assume that you were angry. I apologize.

Who wouldn't be annoyed at someone who wasn't considerate enough to phone when they could easily look up a "good" vs "bad" time to call.

Thanks for elaborating by writing a follow-up. Smile Hope everything works out for you.

Some of the posts were harsh. But I thought that with certain ones, the point was..."If that's annoying, just you wait til you get here."-->Dave's dead horse, beaten many, many times.

In the above statement, Grotto, it seems as though you're judging whether or not someone will last in Korea. People draw conclusions based on what people put in their posts all the time. I'm not saying that I think it's fair to do so. It's just the nature of the (internet) beast.

No problem, no need to apologise. You were perfectly civil. I realise that plenty of things in Korea will annoy me but I'm pretty easy going so I won't worry.

The above post is completely unacceptable. You should be ashamed of yourself, you racist pig. I expect such comments from moronic children not adults. Irish people may drink a lot (the vast majority are not alcoholics, i myself have never been drunk) but to assume that I or many Irish people are alcoholics and drink and drive is racist and absurd. I hope you will remove that post but if you lack the maturity I hope the mods will take action. Why did you make the above statement? The fact that I'm Irish has nothing to do with this thread.

Grotto's irony was intentional. He was simply highlighting the sheer absurdity of responses on this thread.

I agree. "The Man Known As The Man" is basically a circus freak. Unfortunately, many expats here have forgotten such basic normalities as courtesy, equality, and the art of looking in a mirror.

Yes, people do need to have an open mind. If little things bother you so easily, stay home. In his later posts, he seems much better, but in those first few posts he goes off on one phone call.

Let's get to the root of the problem. What would be the best time for recruiters to call your specific location in order to not cause a problem.

For example:

North America: 8:30-11:30am and 830 - 11:30pm Korean time
England/Ireland/Scotland:
South Africa:
Australia: during normal Korean business hours.

Any ideas?

Those first two posts were made at 3.30 AM after I'd been woken and forced to hang up. I think it is understandable that I was a little irritated at that hour.
My attiude in those posts is no excuse for abusive posts targeting me because I'm Irish. I don't really mind being told I'm inflexible and not to come etc., but I do mind being insulted because of where I'm from.

I already know suitable times to receive calls, give me some credit Rolling Eyes . I've been telling every recruiter who asked when is a good time.

Do remember what irony felt like? It's a bit like goldy and bronzy. Just ask Baldrick.
