I need help please. I'm interested in a CELTA course and haven't got a clue about word stress. I need to know how to find the main stressed syllable in these words: For example phOtograph, detErmine.
accountable, practicality, average, distinguished, indifferent, magnification, empathy, sympathise, engineering.
Thanks for any help. |

Dictionary
ac-cOUN'-ta-ble, pRAC'-ti-CAL'-i-ty, etc.
Also, teach the students how to use dictionaries, not those electric jobies, to find word stress and practice. |

| Thanks all. This isn't for the students - but for this CELTA challenged teacher. |

See chapters 5 and 6 of Celce-Murcia, M., Brinton, D. M., & Goodwin, J. M. (1996). Teaching pronunciation: A reference for teachers of English to speakers of other languages. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. It is the most thorough overview of North American English pronunciation and of pronunciation issues in general available. The CELTA people probably don't use it because of the focus on NA English, but the explanations here will serve your purpose and can be adapted to theirs.
Ch 5: Stress, rhythm and adjustments in connected speech
Ch 6: Prominence and intonation in discourse
Specifically you probably want the the subsection of chapter 5 from pp. 133-143 called, "Where the stress falls in a word," which goes over the factors that create predictable patterns to English stress in sub-groups of the lexicon.
Good luck with the CELTA! I hope this helps. |
