Steps Planned to Prevent Fake Degrees
The Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption said Monday that it has recommended a plan to the Education Ministry that would make it more difficult for people to certify fraudulent doctorate degrees from abroad.
Starting in December people with foreign doctorates will have to report to the Korea Research Foundation with information on the certificate of doctorate, curriculum, class hours, grade point average, attendance, language of the doctorate thesis and length of one's stay abroad. Previously, one needed to report only his address, name, university name and thesis paper in order to receive the approval of the degree.
Also, if a university or an institution to which the bearer of the doctoral degree applied for inquires about his or her credentials, the foundation will form a committee of scholastic experts and graduates of the particular school in order to examine the validity of the doctorate.
The names of people with fake doctoral degrees will be posted on the Internet and negligence fines will be imposed, the commission said.

Its sounds like a beaureacratic nightmare for those with legitimate degrees.

What a monumental waste of time. Why is it so difficult to obtain transcripts, a degree and verify the identity of the person who claims its theirs through the passport?
Its not exactly rocket science to be able to determine whether or not a University has some form of official accreditation for its Doctorate programs or whether or not its a Paper Mill like oh... Korean Universities...
Not sure who this effects though, certainly not english teachers. |
