Workers Take 177 Days Off a Year
Hyundai Motor employees will enjoy the greatest number of holidays among their peers worldwide once it introduces the five-day workweek next month.
With the agreement between management and the union, male and female workers of Hyundai Motor will have 165 and 177 holidays per year, respectively.
"Taking days off due to a variety of celebratory and condolences occasions into consideration, the number will come to 170 and 182," a Hyundai Motor executive said.
Employees will stay away from their workplaces for nearly half the 365 days per year.
According to the Ministry of Labor yesterday, the number of annual days off for American workers stands at 121-163, 129-139 for the Japanese, 136 for British workers and 137-140 for Germans.
Most Korean employees have annual vacations totaling 91-101 days, it said.
A Labor Ministry official said, "Personnel costs are expected to surge at the company as compensation will be given to workers not taking their authorized holidays."

Screw my uni job, I wanna work at Hyundai! 
But seriously, who are the bigger fools, the unions for putting their companies down the path to reduncancy through high costs (profit margins on Korean cars are low already), management for giving in and allowing the madness to continue or the Noh government for helping to kill economic recovery. Just plain nuts. |

| Totally agree with the 5 day work week. Through healthier, happier,and perhaps because of that, more productive and ( dare I venture ) creative workers, costs will be defrayed. Not so sure about all the other one off non-work days though. |

Interesting...maybe we should put ourselves in the equation:
I work 187 days this contracted year....
this means 178 days off!
woo-hoo! I'm a Hyundai equivilent employee, working less than 100 hours a month!
How about you??? |

Now if only you received their pay as well as the time off (over 50 million won per annum on average)...  |

comfortable
not drinking too much
regular exercise at the gym (3 days a week)
getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries
at ease
eating well (no more microwave dinners and saturated fats)
a patient better driver
a safer car (baby smiling in back seat)

no paranoia

nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate

at a better pace

concerned (but powerless)
an empowered and informed member of society (pragmatism not idealism)
will not cry in public
less chance of illness
tires that grip in the wet (shot of baby strapped in back seat)
a good memory
still cries at a good film
still kisses with saliva
no longer empty and frantic
like a cat
tied to a stick
that's driven into
frozen winter shit (the ability to laugh at weakness)
calm
fitter, healthier and more productive
a pig
in a cage
on antibiotics |

Unfortunately, the five-day workweek might actually result in longer hours because bosses will probably try to force employees to stay at the office longer through showing up earlier or going home later. Remember, it is still common practice for the boss to leave before anyone else does.
I hope Koreans realize soon that it's not how long you work, it's how well. |

That's never gone over well here and I doubt it will change anytime soon. I've never seen so much wasted office time as I have here. |
