I got my first paystub today and was curious if all these taxes were standard.

My pay is 2million
Deductions are as follows:

24k - witholding tax (wtf is this??)
2.5k -resident tax (so small i almost don't care, but what is it?)
44k - health insurance (is this a normal rate?)
83k - national pension (i can get this back, right?)
0 -employment insurance

Anyone who can explain some of these things, I will love you long time.

Your friend forever,

John

Looks fine. by withholding tax they mean income tax...ie. income with-held for the gov't.

You pay resident tax like once a year.
I just got my bill this week, it was about 4,000 won.

These sound like the right amounts on a 2 mil paycheck. Make sure you get your national insurance card (more of a booklet actually). You will get back your pension times 2 (your employer's contribution) if you are American or Canadian when you leave Korea for good. One of the best and easiest investments you'll ever make. If you are from any other country, you can collect your pension when and if you decide to retire in Korea after the age of 65, assuming the government hasn't pissed away the entire pension fund by then.

taxes look right, health insurance is spot on and the pension looks a little low(shoudl be 90k) if you are Canadian or American you get it back plus your employers contribution!

I am still paying 3.3% income tax. How can I let my boss know it isn't a proper percentage?

Also, I have been working at this school for 6 months and my pension program is still not set up. How do I go about doing this?

What do you mean 3.3% isn't right?

The pension office has an english line (run a search). Tell them what's up, where you live, the name of your school, and the phone number. They should take it from there.

I told them 3.3% isn't right and told them to check with the Tax Office, they still contend that it is the proper amount.

As for pension, they should know what's up. It is a gigantic corporation, that should be aware of every nook and cranny of the law. I sent my manager an e-mail. Hopefully, it will be taken care of, but they are usually very very slow about these things. Especially since it will cost them money.
