We just came out of a meeting with Yonhap where they've agreed to publish a book on expats perspectives of Korea.

Basically the book will be as follows:

1. We're looking for selected articles written by 30-40 expats living in Korea, where they write about something unique to the culture that they love. For example, I'll probably write about falling in love with galbijjim for the first time, the culture street in Daegu full of galbijjim restaurants, etc...Someone else might want to write about their hobby and cultural experiences with Korean archery. Or their enjoyment of jjimjilbangs and saunas. Or your love for the city of Anyang or Changwon or what have you. Anything to do with Korea that you've embraced for one reason or another..

2. Feel free to talk a little about yourself to reference a more personal connection with Korea.

3. We respect that some of you like your privacy, but we'd really like to have accompanying photos of you partaking in your hobby, interest, or location that you are writing about. With the final selected articles, we might send out a professional photographer to best capture you in that environment. However, feel free to submit accompanying photographs, if you have some that you like.

There are no submission guidelines for article length, although we reserve the right to edit or reduce the length, if need be.

The writing relationships that we develop at this point will hopefully result in the first of more writing projects that are being planned for the future.

If your interest is perked enough at this point, please PM either me or Mithridates here or on Galbijim. If you're attaching anything, please send to [email protected].

Thanks a lot for all and any submissions,
Chronic and Mith

Edit: Book project thread link.

Mod edit: No 'paid' references

I bet it's a sting operation. WE'll get paid for writing the book, then they'll rat us out to immigration. Smile

I didn't say anything about requiring real names. We can list your writing credit as Kermit T. Frog for all I care. But we might also be printing this in Korean, so Koreans might flip through it and realize that we're not here exclusively for the broads and the bucks. So coming off as an illegal teacher in your article wouldn't really help with the desired effect.

Is it OK to have a photoessay? For example a series of shots and then some text but not as much as for a written story? I could I guess write about the streets of Seoul, trying to be a street photographer so I hit the streets with my camera pretty often.

That's fine. It's going to be sizable and glossy in the form of a coffee table book, so it can do the pictures justice.

yeah? Thats a great format. Actually, I have been printing up a portfolio (10x15 format) and Im surprised how much injustoce the computer screen does photography. And in that format that should be very good.

Sent you an email. id love to be included. Now the hard part begins, putting words to paper and putting everything in a coherent whole.

Whats the deadline for submissions anyway?

Another good thing would be to take pictures of places / things that we don't/won't have good photos for. One person might know a lot about a place or a subject but won't know how to take a good photograph, and in that case the only options would be to use their stock photography or to get someone else to go in and get the picture.

If you look at my shots, thats what I try to do. I dont have any interest in the usual palace/temple/traditional dancing stuff. I do love the streets though, the dirtier, the farther away from the tourists, the better. Thats where the real seoul is anyway.

That's good. Temples and Namsan and Seoul Tower are blah anyway. I don't suppose you like space? I've been thinking about going down to Jeollanam-do to where they have the space centre almost built and I *think* people are allowed to go and talk (they have a press room). I only have a tiny camera and don't take very good pictures. Or maybe I'll write about something else, not sure yet. I doubt anyone will go all the way down to Jeollanam-do just to take some pictures.

Well, space as in the cosmos? haha I dont know, it might be interesting. I do like open spaces though and people playing games, thats always good for somekind of a photo. Recently Ive fallen in love with the sea, I have a string urge to go to the sea and photograph the people there. A project I have in my head is to go to the southern coast and do an extensive (a week or two) trip from Mokpo to Busan and visit all those remote little islands. Id love to get to see some old korea, how it was before. Fishing villages, people at work, play...maybe even a sunset or two (but not too many ofcourse, theres no bigger cliche in photography than a sunset)

Okay, well here's the area in which it's located and there's the sea right there:

I'll have to check if I can go there though as construction is mostly done, but not quite.

Edit: here's the county where it's located:

I think language and that sort of thing would be something to fall back on just in case the space centre turns out to be a no-go / more boring than expected. I'll contact them in the next few days to see if they have anything worth seeing and whether I / we would be allowed to go at this stage. I'll let you know when I find out. Next week if possible as the weather seems to be ideal.

Im fascinated by your fascination with the Space Center Mith.

My subjects I would write about are sort of similar: streets of Seoul and/or photography in Seoul/Korea.
