Well yea I also play to have fun at home games with friends. My fave variety is actually Chicago, theres nothing like holding the low/high spade and having a couple of players getting near nut hands. Of course online I can hold the nuts and my nuts at the same time. My friends have told me to stop.
BTW sorry to hijack the blackjack thread. Thought it would be nice to contrast the two games in terms of strategy. Also love to talk bout all forms of poker, especially Omaha which I suck at. |

Nice little link there. The advanced rule section is particulaly interesting, it confirms certain techniques that I've been using already and taught me a few more.
I love playing blackjack. It's the only casino game that I enjoy. Roulette, Bacarrat and others are rather monotonous and so un-interactive.
I play a game based on strategy while a buddy of mine plays hunch blackjack. He's 'all in' on one hand, wildy raising on others; sometimes he gets hell lucky and walks away beaming from ear to ear. I play consistent and methodical. My wins aren't big but I don't lose much either. Last time I went, I only won 150,000 won after 16 hours play!
At the end of the day, I just love playing. Even if I lose some, it's good entertainment and you get some back out of them by all the free booze, cigarettes and meals.
Hmm.. the cards are calling! |

Winning at gambling is exactly like winning at stocks:
1. Have a large enough bankroll.
2. Have stop-losses built in, as well as a stop-win. (Hehe...) I.e., set a target for winnings and get up and leave when you hit it.
3. DO use a system to avoid the emotionality.
4. DON'T do it for fun if you actually want to make any money.
5. DON'T go with anyone else. See #4.
6. DON'T drink when playing.
7. Don't play with money you can't lose.
8. Don't quit your day job.
BTW, the stat I've always heard on professional gambling is closer to 5% win over the long term. Everyone else is paying them and the casinos to take your money.
BTW, rarely gamble, but am up 5k over my adult lifetime. (Not counting games with friends/family. That's not gambling, it's entertainment.) |

If dealer has 4,5,6.. never hit if you have anything 12 or above.
if dealer has 7,8,9, face card.. always hit until you are 17 or higher.
if the dealer has 2 or 3.. its your call.. usually i hit if i have 13 or under. |

Now, everyone plays ONLY hold 'em. I recently played at a friend's house with the guys (new group). Hold 'em all night. Only hold 'em. Boooorrrrring. |
I couldn't agree more. I occasionally throw in Indian poker when its my deal. . |

Indian poker on shrooms. Oh my gawd. A bunch of drunks with cards on their faces pissing themselves laughing. Good times. Good times. |

Your rules about gambling are sensible money management (but by no means a winning strategy), but this stat is just plain wrong if you're talking about casino games. Most professional card counters and video poker players can expect edges no higher than 1-2%.
Without counting cards, mathematically perfect strategy on full pay VP machines, or another form of advantage, the house has the advantage and in the long run will always win. |

I was referring to the percentage of successful gamblers, not odds. |

unless you're talking about games where you're playing against other customers and not the house(ie no limit hold em), then you can't win long term when the odds are stacked against you. prove me wrong and i'll eat my hat.
you might be saying that 5% of repeat gamblers win money, but that is just due to short term luck, not due to strategy. if they keep playing long enough, everyone loses to the casino. |

I disagree. It's dangerous to hit when you don't have to. Say you have 13 and the dealer has a two. You hit and you run the risk of busting with a face card.
I also stay sometimes at 16 if the guy before hit and got a bunch of smaller cards. I know many will disagree but I figure I'll save myself a bust and hope that the dealer will. |

I wasn't making any distinction. Gamblers. Is this hard to grasp? I wasn't commenting on what percentage are horse players, poker players, etc. Just gamblers. I'm quite certain there are winners in most types, but they probably are more likely in the card games. But not my point, just a general observation correcting a really outlandish claim that 20% are winners.
BTW, I'm a horses and roulette player and am up 5k lifetime. Sue me.
Haven't done any serious poker yet. On the horizon. |
