Today at the vet, while getting my bill translated to me (the vet loves to use his English), I noticed an English word...."microchip". I was surprised. I wasn't aware that was an option in Korea. At first, I was all for getting it done to both my dogs, then I realized, why bother???? If either dog got lost, what are the chances that they'd be taken somewhere that had a machine that could read the microchips? It isn't like there is an abundance of shelters with them or anything. Also, what address would I use? I move often. I don't even have a phone.

What do you other people with companion dogs do? Right now, my plan is to get ID tags made up with my school's address and the boss' cell phone (provided I can get her to agree). THough, part of me wonders, why bother? They are always leashed and never out of my sight. But am I being an ostrich about it?

And again, *beep* you.

Then again, naaa. You are obviously a very miserable person who has nothing better to do than to try to rile me up. Yeah, you aren't worth it. Poor unloved and unwanted jinju. Sad Really, I feel sorry for you. So many people on these forums hate you so much. I totally understand why they do, but I still feel sorry for you. I hope you find happiness soon.

Okay, now I'm laughing at the very idea of Maltese in the Wild. It could be a National Geographic Special where they show rare footage of packs of dangerous and deadly Maltese hunting down and killing a moose. Or a polar bear. Or a field mouse. Laughing Laughing Laughing Wild Maltese indeed.

Oooh, oooh, oooh....or on a farm. Yeah, packs of Maltese herding cattle. Or carrying little baskets of eggs. OR DRIVING THE TRACTOR! Laughing

And I'm sure that the San Diego zoo would LOVE to have a special exhibit of the rarely seen Maltese. People would be coming in droves to buy tickets for the mere chance of a glimpse of such a Maltese.

The dinner plate. Um, once you shave the hair off, there really isn't that much there. You'd get more meat off a sewer rat.

I chipped both my dogs here in the states. Don't know that it'll do any good when we get back to Korea. I would be really impressed to hear any stories of lost dogs being returned to their owners there, microchips or otherwise.

Bailey has a little capsule (we bought it at the vet, it's tiny-around an inch long and not even half an inch wide) on her collar that when you twist it open it has a paper rolled up in it with her name, our home address, our names and phone numbers on English in one side and Korean on the other. She's always leashed with us too, but I think it's better to be safe than sorry.

Chipping your pet(s) works like this:
1) Get your pet chipped with a unique #. It costs approx. $20 per pet.

2) Fill out form and send it to the "pet recovery" company with your name, address, tel # (and your pet's unique ID #)

3) Your contact details and your pet ID # gets put into a database.

4) If your pet is ever lost, they can be scanned at animal shelters or vet clinics to reveal their ID number and company sponsoring the ID. It has almost become standard procedure to scan for a chip nowadays.

5) Said animal shelter or vet contacts the chip company, provides the pet ID number (which is associated with your info in the database), and the company contacts you concerning who has found your pet.

6) If you ever move, just call the company and make the address and tel# changes to keep your file current.

This is more secure than an ID tag/collar on your pet, which can fall off.

If a military family travels internationally with a pet to a new duty station, now all pet(s) must be chipped before traveling. The company associated with chipping pets on Fort Carson is:

See, that would reassure me if I thought that all or even most vet offices in Korea had such a scanner and that there were plenty of animal shelters that also had them. Don't get me wrong; I'd get them microchipped in an instant back in the States, but here? It doesn't seem like it'd be all that useful. Sad

My last vet, whenever he found a lost dog on the streets, would take it in and try to find a new home for it. Never tried to find the previous owners....just tried to find a new home.

I took my foster dog to a vet to be scanned for a microchip in case she had one (she didn't). I think Karma, which basically serves as the pound for most of Seoul, must have a scanner. I'm sure you can update your information when you move too.
