So I got a notice from my boss today that I need to attend some hagwon teachers conference on Saturday in Seongnam. I have some business which I need to attend to on Saturday, so I may tell them off tomorrow, especially since they only gave me 5 days notice. This is also my during my weekend, and will without a doubt be unpaid. They claimed they didn't know much about this, and if I really have to go, I may just go to the registration and then leave.

The Korean name is 사단성남시 학원 연합회

I just read there's a 10,000원 fee which I sure as hell am not going to pay for. Supposedly there was a conference like this in May, and this is a final warning for my school. If I don't go, the school has to shut down for 15 days, which would be kinda nice, kind of like a vacation since they are already screwing me over with my 1 week paid vacation and putting it during Chuseok week (read one of my previous posts if interested).

Anyways, has anyone gone? What did you have to do? Is it helpful? Please provide details. Thanks

Your boss didn't create this meeting. It is required for you to attend. It is set up by Immigration and required for all foreign hogwan teachers in your area. As much as you might have a problem with your boss, you should attend. Yes it's really boring. Yes it's annoying. Why risk not going?

As far as your school being closed if you don't go, I've never heard of such a penalty. YOU might have to pay a fine if you don't go, however.

You dont have to go! The only people that actually go to that thing are the people who are too stupid to get out of going!

I have never heard of any consequences to any foreign teacher or their institute for the teacher not going!

Every year this thing pops up and every year only a handful of people get suckered into giving up their weekend!

DONT GO! Its not in your contract! Its not on immigrations website! They cannot force you to attend these meetings unless they make it a condition of your E2 visa or if its in your contract!

Hey, do any of you remember the so called degree checking thing at immigration last year around Christmas? They said everyone must go by Dec 31 or you would suffer consequences. Yeah right! Nothing happened at all to the people who didn't go to that.

As for the so called seminar. It's a way to make some quick cash off scared people. They have these seminars every now and then. Ingenius plan to make money.

If you really are fearful and think you should go, encourage your boss to come with you and sit through three hours of nonsense. Say that you heard a rumor that the boss must go too. Say that you are scared to go alone. Your boss won't go because he or she is playing golf at that time.

That's ridiculous. Just say you couldn't find it and don't go. If you are stupid and spineless enought to go be sure to tell your boss that you met another hogwan owner who offered you a much higher-paying job. That will be the last time your boss ever asks you to go to such an event.

I know that in Chungnam the Education Office (not Immigration)has set up similar things before. Went to one and I was the only foreigner there even though the paper said specifically that all English teachers had to go.
You could do what I saw many people do at this thing: go, sign in and leave. There is always a sign-in sheet but no one checks to see if you actually stayed.

I was told that my boss's father will go, since he is the legal owner of the school. I'm going to tell them that I'm busy at that time, which I am, and if they really want someone to go, well then that's their problem. They should have given me more than 5 days notice, especially since this is a final notice to attend and they neglected to tell me about this back in the spring time when there were other times available.

The flyer doesn't contain any information in Korean. Anyways, it's a moot point since I don't have to go anymore
