|
|
My first year student is sitting in the back of the class doing her nails. I come up to her and say. "Please don't do that." Five minutes later, she's text messaging someone. I come up to her and say. " Put away the cell, please." A few moments later I see her putting on nail polish. I come over and say very nicely. "Please leave the class." I repeat this about 5 times. As well, I explain why I'm asking her to leave. She won't leave. Finally, I raise my voice and said. "GET OUT." She leave upset. A few hours later, I get a call from my boss asking what happened in class. I explained everything. She tells me she received a call from the student's mom. The mom tells her that her daughter came home crying and that she was so upset. |

lol.
good for you. Some of these kids need to know the meaning of 'respect', -they think foreigners automatically don't qualify. Parents are the curse of the educational system here. |

So what was the response from your boss after you've explained the situation.
I hope your boss explained the situation to her mom and the student's mom Jap slap the *beep* out of your student. |

A university student crying to mom about having to listen in class. Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me. |

You have to get out of the uni system here. As long as you work for a uni, you'll never actually be a real teacher. |

I guess it depends on the person and on the University if you are seen as a real teacher or not. In that case I would have simply told her that her other activities in class would simply affect her participation score and then I would have spoken to her privately after class or at a later time. If I explained to her it would affect her participation score in the class there would have been no power struggle, I would maintain my integrity as a teacher and the other students would know that there will be consequences for such actions or lack of attention. |

Making university students cry is great! The week before last I made a Japanese student cry by telling her that her seminar topic was descriptive rather than analytic and that she would have to reorganise it. She cried in my office for about half an hour. |

That's hilarious. Next time get someone to translate and call her mom and ask her to punish her. |

Twice last week I middle-aged man in a high-level conversation class turned out to be very sensitive, and nearly brought himself to tears by explaining his views on adoption. |

My boss was very surprised that the situation happened. I explained to her why it happened and she was very understanding towards me. She told me she was going ot call the mom back and explain why I kicked her daughter out of my class. |

Beginning of the semester, especially, you need to set the tone and set boundaries. She was made an example of, and it had to happen to someone. Good for you! Painting your nails in class is a bit much (hell, painting your nails in public is a bit much- the fumes bother people...). I have a friend who is wicked strict with his class. After 10 min, he locks the door, and no latecomers are admitted. I think he also threw a cell phone out the window after warning the student. If homeowrk isn't completed, the slacker has to pick a friend to either 1. sing to the class or 2. do a set of push-ups. I have another friend who takes points off for playing with cell phones, doing make-up, etc.
I had a girl bring her dog to class once. I didn't notice 'til she was leaving, though. Dog slept on her lap the whole time. Actually, when I taught at a haggie, a teacher couple would bring their dog to school, too... Strange~ |

I see nothing "cool" about a teacher booting a student out of class. As a "teacher" you gotta know how to work through things like that and handle them properly/professionally. Example, a student's poor behavior is just an attention getting device or a sign they don't understand you. In this situation I simply would've moved the student to the very front and pay just a little extra attention to her in class to get her interested and motivated.
Instead, this student and her mother is going to tell and text message all friends, neighbors, teachers, bosses, etc. how cruel and evil you and all foreigners are. If you would've handled it with more tact, not only would you have her respect, but that of the entire class.
Nail and phones, c'mon....not like she was biting the ankles of another student...
And these sheltered uni students are STILL children so gotta approach some with that in mind. |

Give me a break. I throw assclown students out of my class regularly at the start of the semester and confiscate cell phones for a period of time and the message gets across within 2-3 classes and I seldom have problems after that. And that thing about parents telling others is a crock. They are embarrased their kid is thrown out. You're right they're kids and they have to know who the boss of the class is. I've actually had students clap when I throw students out. |

What kind of class was it? What is your teaching style? Are you saying she is incapable of hearing when she is painting her nails?
Throwing uni kids out of class is the last straw. I did it once. The guy was a total ass and I was about to grab hi by the ear and drag him out of class. If they want to act like a kid, treat them like one.
They are paying for the class (or at least mom is) if they don't want to pay attention and screw around all class.....I could give a rat's ass.
If they interfere with me or the other students, then they might get the old heave ho. |
