Just bought an iPod and all the music I'm putting on it gets played at a really fast rate. Any ideas why?

I don't know much about Ipods, but I've heard that they have a "speed control" setting of some sort. Check out the settings, as they are probably set at 1.5X or 2X rate. This is for listening to podcasts, as people seem to retain them better when listening at a higher rate.

only thing that could be doing that is a sample rate problem. anybody know if ipods automatically sample to 48kHz? if your mp3s are encoded at a lower sample rate than what your player is playing them at, the music will be faster than it should. never heard of a player automatically sampling though. weird.

*edit*
sorry, didn't know about the speed control thingy, hopefully it's that then, not the sample rate.

There are so many threads about iPods messing up.

Let me tell you something - Minidiscs cost less. You can buy blank discs for the MD that cost $5 and they hold 49 hours of music. If my minidisc messes up I still have my whole music collection on disc. I can record anything I can hear - it has a microphone input so I can record direct from my PC, TV, DVD player as well as record speeches. They battery life is looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong. And if the battrey life dies out, I can go to HomePlus and get TWO new batteries for only $10 (rechargable). MDs are pretty durable. Last summer I was driving about the USA and would listen to it for 20 hours non-stop. I have used it everyday for 16 months and never had any problems. Its been dropped quite a few times as well.

But hey... iPods have those cool commercials.

Hurrah for Minidiscs!!

It is a nice technology. I still have mine but I use it less and less. The big letdown for minidisc was Sony's awful, awful software. Transferring songs from my PC to MD player was a huge headache.

But, yeah. I still think MD kicks the ass of any MP3 player.

So many messed-up-iPod threads? Tens of millions of them were sold, so there are bound to be thousands messed up, and so hundreds of threads. It's a matter of perception, which is conditioned by preference. MD players? Not that many were sold...
I'd try searching on the Apple's support pages, on google(etc), and/or reloading the software--stick in the disc that came with the ipod and follow the directions. A reload will fix that kind of problm for sure.

Yes, instead of being helpful, lets hijack the thread and bash Apple. And you people complain about Mac users being upity.
