The friend I was going to be staying with returned to Australia because he missed his wife and kids. I'll be travelling with a backpack and daypack (laptop, dslr, snow pants/jacket) to seoul. I was planning on waiting until I was over there and could check out the schools before I signed a contract. I'll be entering on a tourist visa and I haven't learnt one word in Korean yet (I did look in the bookstore this morning). I realise all my sentences start with I (I'm not normally like that).

My new plan will be to stay in a ?hostel? for I'm estimating a week, before I secure a job and get an apartment? Then they will fly me to japan for a visa run.

Slap me in the face if my naivety is going to screw me with this plan.

Well if you need a good hostel check this one out:

I think it is good that you are coming to check out the schools first. Might take more than a week I think.

The first week in October is basically a holiday week (Monday and Wednesday aren't for hogwons but most public schools are closed). I'm not sure if that will make it tougher or not.

I know several people who have done exactly that: flown themselves over here and stayed in hostels or at friends' places until they found a job.
Send out a whole bunch of emails (with your resume and picture) to recruiters and schools you see advertising jobs in advance, then when you get here arrange interviews and go to other schools in person to drop off your resume. I can't estimate how long it will take you, but it doesn't seem to take most people very long.

Good luck!

Got to agree with this post. The first week of October everything will be closed and everyone will be out of Seoul. Not much chance of finding a job. Better be prepared to sit and wait out the holiday season.
