Korean Air has forbidden the use of Dell and Apple laptop PCs during flight due to the risk of battery explosion, according to the Korean Times.
The Korean national flag carrier said yesterday that the ban was put in place after the two computer manufacturers announced a recall of batteries used in some of their notebook models.
"Due to the risk of onboard fire, we are not allowing passengers to use certain brands of laptops on the plane. Safety always comes first for us," a Korean Air spokesperson told the Times, adding they were unsure when the ban would be lifted.
Although the airline is prohibiting all models of Dell notebooks and Apple's PowerBook and iBook systems, users can reportedly continue to carry them on board the flight if they separate the batteries into checked baggage.
"We have put notices at check-in counters and boarding gates but we dont inspect all carry-on baggage," a gate attendant told the Times.
Korean Air is the second airline to restrict the in-flight use of Dell and Apple notebooks in recent weeks. Late last month, Australia's Qantas announced a similar policy. |

This is completely ridiculous. I don't know about Dell, but I seem to remember reading that the latest Apple battery recall was because something like six people complained about their laptops getting too hot. There were definitely no fires involved. |

Either this just happened in the last few days or they aren't following their own rules. I flew in on KAL Sunday before last with my Powerbook in my carry on bag. I also used it during the flight. |

I'm flying Sunday back to the States for a week. What a bother this is going to be. The battery problems with Apple were for batteries with certain serial numbers for each type of laptop. I checked. My computer's battery is not from that batch. So, I'm gonna have to remove it and then replace it later anyway because they can't understand the limited aspect of this problem? Stupidism strikes again. |

Craptastic! I'm slated to arrive this weekend... WITH A MAC LAPTOP!
Maybe if I run down to the Apple store before hand they can give me a doctor's note or something saying my laptop doesn't spontaneously combust.
Of course, it's not like I'll be using my laptop on the flight... that's what my DS and Ipod are for:p |

Just hide it- you don't have to show anyone what kind of computer you have. Have an Apple or Dell logo on your bag? Turn it around so they can't see the logo if you're worried about it. Flight attendants for sure won't give a rat's behind what kind of computer you have. ^~ |

Yeah that is pretty stupid. I have an older Dell labtop (bought it in July 2003) and checked the serial number. My battery should be fine. They did only say that you couldn't use it, not that you couldn't carry it on the plane. Either way, whoever made that decision at Korean Air is an idiot. |

There is more to the story.
It started with Apple notebooks. Then it progressed to Dell. Given the population of Dell notebooks over Apple, they should be reporting more problems.
The cause of these explosion and "inferior" batteries?
Improper use, but most importantly, poorly fitted battery by the companies themselves and not regulated according to Sony specs. The same batteries are used in Sony, Toshiba, IBM and Panasonic notebooks and they don't have problems.
They are doing the right thing with the recall, but another company Panasonic is not taking any chances and is recalling some of their notebooks to be sure. My guess is that they're not doing the battery management right, taking shortcuts to ensure longevity over reliability.
Anyway, free recall means free replacements for new batteries |

Fire Retardant MacBook Wraps
With all the buzz around about exploding batteries and faulty power cords you may need some extra protection. Introducing Wrappers, the fire retardant wrap for your Apple MacBook. Although the Wrappers were probably created to protect your Mac from the flames of a burning office and not from a defective battery, you can't have too much protection right? They come in several colors so you can choose your own flavor.
"Wrappers jumbocord covers for Apple's MacBook are made from contract quality corduroy. Contract quality means the fabric has passed a 100,000 wear and tear rub test. The fire retardant backing uses the latest graphite granule technology, which as well as a safety benefit, prevents the corduroy loosing its shape over time. Sleeves have a layer of cushioning for added protection and a chestnut coloured microfibre lining." |
