EFL Law is providing a tremendous service by professionally trained lawyer(s) in directing teachers to accurate/ helpful information. Clearly by the fact that there are so many complaints about employers in Korea (See Dave's ESL cafe as compared to Japan, for instance)by English teachers who need quality service from people with exceptional and clear English ability -and legal expertise.
Of course many Seoul lawyers know some English but law is a very intricate matter and it is the high priced lawyers who tend to have the nearer native ability who are unavailable to the many "low" income teachers. Most teachers it needs to be remembered are not upper bracket income people. So why is this association called Seoul Lawyers Association (see news on EFL Law.com) trying to shut down a site which is so practical.
One wonders who else will be next or constricted. An interesting question would be to see how many of these lawyers have ever done work for people who own hagwons.or certain government agencies (Education institutions or departments which employ native speakers)?I simply pose it as a question not to imply that for sure there is some link. That would be unprofessional, of course. But still an interesting question and one which some established and well funded human rights groups might have interest in looking into. There are hopefully more important issues within Korea that the Seoul lawyers ass. may need to look at that for example could relate to ethical practices, billing, peddling political influence. Or maybe not. Over to you. |

July 2003: Korea
The Seoul Association of Korean Attorneys sent out letters to various legal portal companies which were giving non-free legal advice on-line. The Association is seeking stoppage of non-free legal advice, drafting of legal documents and the operation of legal information contents sites. This action is based on the Article 109 of the Attorneys Rule which prohibits non-law firms (even if an attorney is the Representative) from providing non-free legal advice and drafting of legal documents.
The Association has stated that it will seek legal remedies if the companies involved do not stop their prohibited practices. This action is a result of the Association's having investigated approximate 10 on-line legal information portal sites.
Comment:
Given the very few legal resources available to expat Teachers in Korea, this would appear prima facie to compound the situation of Korean Employer's abusing teacher's rights, as lawyer's fees are generally beyond the reach of most teachers.

That URL doesn't quite get you there, but I think this is the text you're looking for.
EFL Law doesn't charge for its services, so I don't think there's a problem here. The Seoul Association of Korean Attorneys is warning "non-free" providers of legal advice.
Also, it's generally considered a no-no to give legal advice if you're not a lawyer, free or not free. Lawyers generally do not like any competition for their services, this probably doesn't have anything to do with their being in league with hogwon directors.

Couldn't the site just be hosted outside Korea, with DNS contact info for a friend or relative in North America? Seems like that'd put it outside these boneheads' jurisdiction... |
