Went to Cuba when i was 21, would really love to go back. We hired a car and spent a few days in Havana before spending three weeks driving the length of the island to Santiago de Cuba. The Cuban people are so friendly, people we had only just met offering us a room to stay in for the night and breakfast in the morning.
A few of my friends are trvelling the whole of the caribbean early next year for the Cricket world cup, jammy buggers!!! |

A little-heralded gem in the Caribbean is the Colombian island of San Andres. I visited 35 years ago. A quick google shows me its grown up some but it still looks captivating. |

Not a bad country. I used to have a place down across the road from Rockley Beach. (Not too far from Grantly Adams airport). Never did like the windward side though and there were too many tourist places up the leeward side of the island.
I also liked Antigua (race week), and the A.B.C islands (Aruba, Bonair and Curacco - awesome for diving).
I liked to visit St. Lucia too. There was a place on a narrow bay up on the north east coast (close to Castries) that was pretty nice and had a good beach. The bay protected it from the wave action.
We found some previously undiscovered old cannon and other stuff there back in '79. |

Mine would be:
Dominican Republic: I like Dominicans.. and use to live in a Dominican neighborhood in NYC. The people are really friendly and lively.. and most are black/white mix much like Cuba or Brazil.. but even more mixed. Culture-wise, its mostly salsa and baseball there. But quite a few beaches.. and its a country that not many people explore as far as Caribbean countries go. The beaches look great, and Santo Domingo is a really old capital with a lot of history and architecture thats often overlooked (or so I've heard).
Cuba: Because its Cuba.
Trinidad: Because of Carnival! Plus its English-speaking with a large diverse population which includes a heavy India population.. mixed with African. I think might even be some Chinese there, but very low %.
Cartagena, Colombia: The architecture, history, and people! One of the most desireable cities in the region that I really want to see.
Miami: Its Miami!
Cancun: Never thought it would be my thing - seems like a Spring Break destination for college students. But I saw some pictures of the beaches and water there.. looks incredibly gorgeous! |

Just a tip to get along - don't tell the Dominicans that they are black or a mix of "black/white," - many will find it offensive. Most will say they are "indios," even though it's historically inaccurate. Dominicans are largely prejudiced against "black" people, because that means the Haitians. Many complained that they were treated "like black people" when visiting the U.S. There is some tension between Dominicans in the DR and the Americanized version who grew up in the U.S. (and, in my humble experience, quite a significant difference in personality).
On a side note, the D.R. is great to visit, but the poverty is striking and many attitudes are still quite machismo. On the other hand, the beaches are beautiful and reasonably priced, and the rum is cheaper than water. Lots of good dancing (merengue). I personally have no desire to ever return to Santo Domingo. It's crowded, dirty, and hot, though I suppose there is some nice architecture and interesting history.
I think I'd prefer something less exotic next time like the U.S. Virgin Islands or maybe the Caymans. |

I sailed from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad last summer. I saw several islands but I did not get to visit Dominica, one of the few islands with native Caribs. Also, I would like to Montserrat because of its Irish history and geography. |

Antigua is my favourite island there. A different beach for every day of the year! |
