What would you reccommend I absolutely not miss seeing in Shanghai, Xian and Beijing?

(Aside from the Terricotta Warriors, Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and Summer Palace)

Cheers!

If you are going for under two weeks, skip Shanghai, though that maglev train is awesome Wink

Xian can be done in two days, but is really just a stepping stone for the West. Still, going west is not easy as transportation sucks and it's fricken big, so I don't think you will be thinking of that.
Near Shanghai are Nanjing, Hangzhou and Suzhou. These are great places to visit.

Down south is absolutely awesome, but I don't think you will have time. Beijing zoo has pandas, and the aquarium there isn't that bad.
What are you looking for? The OP is a little vague.

Ill explain a little more.......

A friend and I have booked flights to the three cities, but have very limited time in each of them - 3 days in Shanghai, 2 days in Xian and 4 days in Beijing.

With such limited time, I was wondering how it is best spent....?

What sights should absolutely not be missed in these cities?

Xian is mostly just the city wall (pretty cool), the bell tower in the middle, and the warriors. Gold is pretty cheap there too if that helps any Wink

Beijing, you can do the SUmmer Palace, Heavenly Gate and Forbidden Palace in one day (I would suggest a English speaking tour, you can get one at the airport, just because they get all the transportation done for you). The Great Wall should be one day. You can go to Badaling, the main tourist part. There are other sections as well. I went to Ma~~~. The other two are more treacherous, so maybe not good for you guys. You should try to do some DVD or other shopping, it's so cheap. There is a place called HongQiao Market. It is more geared for foreigners, so while you won't get as good as prices somewhere else, they all speak English. Still, don't accept what they first tell you.

For Shanghai, I would honestly suggest day trips (or even an overnight one) to Hangzhou and Nanjing. If possible, on the way back go to Suzhou (silk capital of China). Take some nights to go around Shanghai for it's atmosphere and maybe the older European area. I usually only went shopping and partied in Shanghai. In Shanghai, if you are coming in or going out of the International Airport Pudong, USE THE MAG LEV TRAIN. IT's an awesome experience, and significanlty faster even if there is no traffic, which there is always on the way to the airport. It's also only a few kuai (pronounced "kwai", and said more often for the money, like we say "buck" for "dollar") less.

Any questions, ask. I will try to help.

I loved Kunming, Dali and LiJiang. But the best was Jinghong. If there were any English teaching jobs down there that paid more than a few bucks an hour (see later though) and didn't have very sketchy business practices, I would be working and living there. The city was great!

Anyways, while a few bucks an hour sucks for savings, and I am not some rich backpacker using daddy's money, I just can't live there and not save. "BUT", having said that, you can also get a complete steak and potato dinner with a beer there for about 18 kuai (2.25 US). The local food is much cheaper, like 2 or 3 kuai. I was happy when I had realized that I had budgeted way too much for the trip there Smile

Beijing?

The Great Wall, umm, that's about it. I thought the place was too damned crowded.

Shanghai? The Bund and many party-places. Get laid at least 5 times!

Has anyone been to Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, and Temple of Heaven in Beijing?

Yes. Wasn't impressed too much with tianamen square. Liked both of the palaces--definitely worth a visit (summer and temple of heaven). We went to the silk market--great place to buy stuff. Also went to a chinese acrobat performance which as cool. Went to some kind of culture village which had all the cultures found in China--people in native dress, typical homes of that kind of culture, etc. It was interesting!
