I had the opportunity last week to teach a writing lesson to some of my first grade middle school students. I was thinking that this week I would read a few of the better essays in each class out loud to the students. Would that be okay, or would that embarrass the students? I'm afraid of reading something out loud to the class that the students consider to be personal and private. The topic, by the way, is what they did during their summer vacations. Most of the writing is just about how much fun they had at the beach, etc., but some are more serious. One girl, one of my best students, wrote a really thoughtful essay about going to the North Korean observatory, and how it made her nervous, with all the socialists (her word) around, and how she hoped North and South Korea would unite and be one country again. Would you share something like that with the class?
Thanks for your advice. |

Why not get the students to read their own essays? |

How about posting the best ones on the wall so students can read them at leisure, or making handouts of them and doing a lesson based on them?
I say that because chances are, each essay has vocabulary that many students won't know. I for one would get bored real quick if someone read at me with a bunch of words I don't know. (And yes, if anyone reads them to the class, it should be the students.) |
