I called Korean Airlines the other day to ask about any possible extension to my return ticket home. They flat out refused (as I somewhat expected). Has anyone heard of any possible bargaining with ticket agents to allow it? Would it help at all for my director to call the airline? Has anyone been at all successful in paying an extra couple of hundred Canadian to do this?

If not, is there any way for me to cancel the return ticket, and get credit with Korean Airlines? I did not pay for the ticket myself. It was paid for by a different school (long story, don't ask, just trust that I'm not looking for a free ride here). I've been with my new school for just over a month and am just trying to plan a trip home for Christmas.

What kind of ticket is it? It is a Return Ticket with an Open ended return?

If so, you cannot go beyond a year. 365 days is it, they will not grant an extension if you've passed the year mark.

If it has a fixed return date, you should be able to change it for a small processing fee.

You cannot cash in on the return portion of a return ticket, its use it or lose it.

I cashed in the return leg of my ticket, having been married here and switched visas, but incurred a penalty for doing so- the booking agent did it- the airline having first said no.
I suggest you try the agent, even it"s "Back home". If you have no agent you probably, as Jack says, can't do anything.

I just looked into this myself. If you want to do it and you live in Seoul, go to the Korean Airlines office in Kangnam. You can get a refund on your ticket, but you'll lose some money. My return ticket cost me 1300$ Cdn; they were going to give me a refund of only 350$.

Thanks for your help, even if it's not exactly good news. I suppose $350 is better than nothing. As for the kind of ticket it is, I believe it is an open ended one. The lady I spoke with on the phone was pretty firm about my not being able to extend it.

I've had tickets refunded in the past - return legs. Took a few months for me to see the money. I've also been able to extend a one year open return ticket to 3 months past the year expiration date (was with Qantas). I suggest you keep trying with different people.
