...I got today: a whole carton of Marlboro cigarettes. I don't know if they dropped by and left it on my desk or actually sent a carton of smokes along with their daughter (I'm guessing her homeroom teacher would believe her if it was found in her bag) but my student texted me to say there's a carton of ciggies 'on your "table" from my parents' (she meant desk). 'Thanks - what table?' I messaged her back. 'Your messy table' she responded.
Don't ever let anyone tell you that giving students extra attention doesn't pay off in more than just emotional satisfaction.  |

"Messy table", huh? Me too, makes me wonder if that's a sign of a teacher.

I sometimes get 'teachuh, you no like cleaning?' from students who stop by the staff room. Once a week a class drops by to clean the staff room and the two girls who are designated to go around cleaning the surface of teachers' desks are always at a bit of a loss for what to do with mine. |

I was once given an expensive Aftershave and Skin Care set for Christmas (two years later I am still using the last of it).
I knew the 11 y/o student liked me but her mother was super generous with all the teachers at my small hagwon. A Korean co-teacher was given some beautiful jewelery and had a personal crisis over whether she could accept it or not. I chose not to ever enquire if she refused or accepted the gift because the conversation sparked by the event was very educational. It seems Korean parents do feel their childrens futures could be in some way penalised if they don't fork out for quality teachers day presents.
I never needed a bribe to like the student in question but the gift certainly made me feel lucky to teach her.
On a separate note my friend and co-worker was offered 150,000 won cash to give a student extra attention during his class. Much to my surprise this teacher of 16 years New Zealand experience had no qualms about taking the money and justifying it by saying to me "All his students get quality teaching and it wouldn't hurt anyone to give little 'Johnny' a few spare minutes each class". To this day I can't defeat my friends logic because he was quite an exceptional teacher and I learnt a lot about teaching from him at a time when I knew so so little.
It's certainly an interesting and topical cultural difference.
