I left on a midnight run a few months back, with very good reason. A family member was dying--and I don't regret leaving for the time I was able to spend with them. I know immigration may charge a fine or whatever, no problem. The info I'm looking for is this--will it be possible to return when the date of my previous contract expires and get a job. I heard something about having to wait a few years. Does anyone know what the fine to immigration might be? Appreciate your help.

I have never heard of the "extra years" thing unless you were charged with some sort of crime and banned from Korea for an amount of time. You would know it if you were, so after that one year I see no reason why you aren't free.

There should be no problem getting back in the country, unless your school called immigration and black-listed you. Then they will not allow an E2 visa to be processed until that school calls immigration to remove you.

The easiest way to find out, is to go through the process, and once you get your E2 confirmation #, you will know that you are safe.

how can your school blacklist you???? please.

Quitting your job is not a crime. There is nothing they can do to you. just wait till your old visa expires, then come back.

I hired some teachers s few months ago. They accepted a contract with another school. Once they arrived in Korea, the school informed them that there was actually no position for them. Their recruiter tried to find them another job. It was taking a fair amount of time. So, they decided to look through another recruiter. That is when they came to us. We offered them a position, offered the other school that they were working with to pay for their plane tickets. We started processing the Visa, and we were told by immigration that their origianl recruiter had contacted immigration and said that there was money owing to the recruiting agency.

Immigration would not process the visas until the recruiter called immigration saying that the problem had been resolved.

I thought it was not possible either until this happened.[/quote]

Generally, however, there's not a problem - whether your original visa has expired or not. Just leave the country and tell them to cancel your visa, and when u return on a tourist visa you can get a new E-2 visa even if your original visa was not completed.

It's actually a very simple process. The school that wants to blacklist a teacher merely contacts Immi with a note saying whatever they want to say...the teacher owes money, the teacher has a 'bad character', the teacher behaved 'innapropriately'....whatever they want to say. Immi puts it in their file.

Next time the teacher gets hired and a prospective employer sends in the forms, Immi opens the old file and voila! There it is.

I was accused of industrial espionage and investigated by the Korean 'CIA' two or three times. Very Happy

haha! that's the funniest thing I've heard in a while... Immigration doesn't have enough time, money, or manpower to keep track of all the teachers in Korea...

The OP will have no problems whatsoever coming back to Korea to teach...

Immigration is like Korea - disorganized, incompetent, and corrupt..

You may want to do a test run and have a recruiter run your paper work through immigration for you before you leave your home country. If there is a problem they will know rather quickly.

Once you leave the country, can your owner claim anything that would affect you while you are in your own country? Have there been any cases where a teacher has been brought back to stand trial for something or is it all just threats and action if the teacher returns?

Do you think your busy director will spend the time and money to search you down and get things from you?

He's going to forget about you and hire another teacher ASAP to take your place..

DCJames...immi does not have to "keep track of teachers" they have our passeport numbers in the visa file as does the school.

All the school needs to do to blacklist a teacher is file a complaint with immigration and flag the passeport number. The next time the teacher enters Korea or applies for a visa his p-number will raise a flag...voila...as easy as 1,2,3....

DC,

You can be ignorant or stupid. Take your pick. Or perhaps you are both. I'd advise ignorant because there is a remedy for that.

I did not say bosses habitually do this. I said they can if they choose. It happened to me. I've been here since '94. What credibility (other than big talking) can you put up beside that?

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate everyone's input. I'll apply in the next few months and see how it goes.
