Oh boy. A few Catholic officials have been kidnapped in the Middle East and always get released VERY quickly. Mostly its just hajjis grabbing anyone white and when they figure out who they have, they release him. I wonder if the Pope's recent comments are going to see an end to this sportsman's relationship Muslim terrorists and the Catholic Church have been enjoying the last few.

i was shocked by what he said. John Paul II was much more tolerant, saying that Jews, Muslims, and Christians all pray to the same God. this new pope is bad news -- i never liked Ratzinger. and i don't want the Vatican blown to shreds.

The Pope is absolutely right.

And trust me. I'm no Papist.

I hope he sticks to his guns. Apologize? For what? Telling the truth?

I'm very pleased with what the Pope said and I hope that he doesn't let the stupid egotistical rant of Muslim posturers faze him. The pope's statements don't express intolerance to anyone except the illiterate. The emperor he was quoting may not have been religious material, but the points he extracted were relevant.

This should be a sticking point between Muslims who view jihad as personal struggle and Muslims who view jihad as an excuse to murder, not between the east and west.

The Pope has already issued a retraction saying offence was not the intention. From what I can gather, all he said anyway is that religion should not be spread by violence.

Mixed feelings. It opens a kettle of fish he should probably have stayed out of, and sooner or later someone will point out that what Catholics did in Mexico in the 1500s wasn't a whole lot better than what Muslims do today in northern Africa. On the other hand, I wonder what some Muslim leaders use for brains: apologize for calling us a violent religion or we'll kill all of you (again); don't come to Turkey because, well, accidents happen, you know, mon?

Yeah, you've boiled the problem down.

Muslims are still living in the 1500s.

Time to get with it, wouldn't you say? Sure beats waiting for the return of the 5th Imam.

Oh, almost forgot, we live in a liberal society. Can't say nothin' bad about no-one less they get offended. So what the hell if you like blowing up planes and murdering civilians in the name of God? Those poor people got rights you know! The West made em do it anyway.

You gotta love the West. The day has come folks - right here and now - when we can't even say mass murder in the name of God is just plain wrong. Of course it is OK if the object of hate is white, Christian, male, conservative and middle class. After all, they are privileged, ain't they?

The Pope should have just shut his mouth, initiated self-flagellation, uttered a thousand self-criticisms, and ameliorated himself. He'd be safe then.

BTW, I think Islamic extremism is fine and dandy, just quietly. There's nothin' wrong with it at all. And just for the record, I am not, nor have I ever been white, Christian, conservative, male or middle class. Nor has anyone else in my family or circle of immediate friends.

have any of you read his remarks? This is the remark he made that has made so many people angry
"He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached,' "
The quote is from Emperor Manuel II. The pope's point was that religion shouldn't be used to justify violence. This is a good point and the pope does carry a lot of weight, but he could have done that without including a quote that says to many people, (especially semi-literate muslims who will only hear about this by word of mouth and at anti-Catholic rallies) that everything Muhammad brought was evil and inhuman.
