|
|
Everyone loves "Kermo" (I figure I'll pre-empt any bad stuff she may wanna post about me with that disarming statement...) and everyone who knows "Hater Depot" (club pres...) would agree that he's too mellow to be hated... Our gathering in Namsan park had it's ups and downs (mainly going up and down Mt. Namsan...) but "Hater Depot's" positive thinking and laid back style (and my scrambling around to find enough plates for everyone...) helped to make it an enjoyable, interesting experience for all who came for stir-fried vegetables, vegetarian hot dogs, sliced faux turkey, homemade veggie burgers, and tofu topped with Korean sauces. Most folks drank beer, including me (but mine was NA...)
Here's my one pic with "Kermo" (I think it was after we got off the Mt. Namsam cable car and some of us were waiting in the parking lot for "Hater Depot" and his girl friend to arrive in the next car...)
Here's another partial group shot of the actual cook-out (more details in the "General" forum thread...)
And here's some of us headed back up the mountain - to ride back down:

i'm actually a carnivore who infiltrated in the hopes of converting some dreadheaded veggie chompers.
but i must say that rteacher's homemade veggie patties were quite delicious. in fact, i think i'm the one who's been converted...
now i'm an omnivore. while i still had a bloody beef burger for supper, i put a tomato on it too.

Is it okay if I point out that the creation of imitation meat indicates an innate desire for actual meat, and that humans are thus naturally disposed to eating flesh? |

Well, most of us were meateaters - at least in our most "formative" years, and there's no denying that animal flesh and blood has a stimulating taste. I don't think most vegetarians are motivated mainly by eating mainly for taste - but a lot of vegetarian food does taste very good, and every old culture (especially Asian, but also European, Greek, Mexican, etc. has many classic vegetarian recipes...)
"Robot" was a great help to me by volunteering to carry two heavy bags I had practically half-way up-and-down the mountain. I have a chronic disk problem in my lower back that flares up whenever I overexert , and I'm feelin' it some today, but not nearly as bad as it would have been without his help... |

No offensive to the vegetarians but I never have understood why y'all get food that tastes like meat food.
If you don't like meat, why get meat flavoured vegetable products?
Say what you will but I prefer portabello mushroom burgers or even some fried mushroom and onions to a vegetarian patty. |

I think it's not always about "not liking" meat. They may like meat, but have other reasons not to eat it. Some of the reasons are:
1) it is a religious reason
2) an animal rights reason
3) even just health reasons. |

Social conventions (like Thanksgiving "Veggie Turkeys") clever marketing and packaging... Some brands, of course, tast much better than others...
The veggie burgers that I concocted didn't taste much like meat at all - basically cooked brown rice, lentils, mung beans, chic peas and some vegetables and spices held together by sunflower seed butter and pan fried in sesame oil... |

Ahh, there's another thing. Maybe it's just that the shape and make of a hamburger makes a great meal. Maybe it's not that it tastes like meat, but the hamburger is a great way to make something (you can put stuff on it and it's finger food). It could be like we don't make boats with a square keel. They just don't work as well |

Actually, yeah, those are freakily good. The veggie chicken patties are ok. Their burgers are crap though. |

I've heard that Hillary Clinton bought cases of Boca Burgers for Bill back when they were still in the White House. Most of their stuff has like a metallic taste though, and a lot of big "health food" companies get bought out by big corporations - including meat-packing and tobacco companies...
My favorite brands for taste were probably Yve's and Amy's, several Gardenburger varieties, and (for Thanksgiving fake turkey with stuffing...) Now and Zen...

Quorn products, while a bit dry sometimes, are quite good, Quorn tenders can be used in place of chicken for stir-fry, stews, pot pies etc.
and Quorn makes a loaf that can be 'roasted' and carved for the holidays
boca breakfast 'sausage' patties are good as well
there's a brand of korean veggie sausage thats quite good sliced and fried as banchan or in kimbap and there's veggie mushroom tangsooyook they sell frozen thats is tasty, comes with dipping sauce too |
