I have a question about cyworld.. I have seen a lot of korean cyworld homepages.. something i find odd is their photo sections.

Why do koreans (mostly girls) take pictures of their feet?? I mean why would u take a photo of your feet? i dont get it.. when asked to koreans i get the same answer, "I dont know"..

Can anyone answer this question??

one person did it and then several and then many people started doing it. that's how things work in Korea.

Indeed,

The quest for originality and being cool makes everyone in Korea behave exactly in the same way.

pretty cool that is.

That about nails it I suspect. And it's very close to my personal mantra for dealing with Korea. "Why is it like this? That makes zero sense." "Why? Because it's Korea."

I put a picture of my foot on my cyworld page back in 2004. Why? It's just a cute thing to do, if your toenails were freshly painted. hehehe

I think you already have an answer... People take pictures of their feet everywhere, but it's usually only a couple of them. Once it's done it's done; It's no longer original and those from the west have no more interest in it. Here, everything seen as cute or cool is done by everyone before it gets old and fizzles out.

Cyworld was created with the intention of people putting photos of

Feet

Peace signs (with the fingers)

Food

Obscure art

Actors and singers

Cute stuff (babyish cute, not just cute)

You see, it's a funny thing. You would assume that a homogenous society is more stable and predictable than a mixed society. But in fact (by "in fact" I mean "something I made up"), because homogenous societies can be so faddish, they give rise to strange phenomena that don't take place in mixed societies as much. For example, everybody and their brother is going to jam the highways for chuseok soon because *everybody* celebrates chuseok in Korea. In America, even the most popular holiday, Christmas, isn't celebrated by large groups of people. So the highway traffic is a little more stable in that regard. I guess you could say that Korea's homogeneity makes it very...

...dynamic!
