|
|
hello-
if you want to make a midnight run what's the best way to get all your money home? do you just wire as much as possible home and then get the rest out in cash won? will the bank be suspicious? if you do have to take won out in cash do you exchange it at the airport in korea or in your home country?
also, is there any way that a school can retrieve their lost monies from you once you've left the country? can they affect your credit? can they put you on some kind of hiring blacklist if you ever want to come back to korea to teach again?
- thanks |

Unless someone's boss has been physically abusive, or threatened to be, I don't see why someone would do a 'midnight run'. Besides, you can always sort these things out with the help of the labor board.
With that said, you can bring up to 10 000$ back home undeclared, so you don't have to send all your money if you have more than that. You might even be able to bring in more money if you have non-resident status in your country or because you've been working abroad (check with your embassy). |

You dont owe us an explanation for your reasons to do a runner.
You can take your money out of here any way you wish. Personally, if its less than 10 million won, I would just carry cash. More than that then I might transfer it out.
There is no way to retrieve or extract any money from you after you leave Korea. Your credit in your home country will not be affected.
They may blacklist you for working here for a while. You could just wait a while, apply for a new position and see if your E-2 is approved. |

| Take your money out and either get cash or a money order or traveller cheques. |

well we have the usual reason for wanting to leave- completely tyrannical boss. it's unfortunate really. we like korea, our apartment, the food, the sites, and we've even made some friends but we just cant deal with the job any longer (plus we're missing out on some pretty important stuff back home). we dont have the money to leave just yet but we will before the year is up. im a little worried about making the run in secret though. we havent told anyone here in korea. we hope it goes smoothly and that we can leave without a hitch. we just really cant afford to pay the recruiter fee back- plus it wouldnt surprise me if our boss just fired us on the spot if we told her we wanted to leave early. she's really insane.
so any advice about leaving early in secret would be much appreciated! |

should we not wire any home? it only costs like $5 and i'd be a little worried about carrying around 3 million won or so. |

Sending money home is a common occurance here and no one will notice or care.
It is MORE than $5 though. The combined bank and carrier charges can run to more than $30 for a wire.
Get a money order from the foreign exchange desk at your neighbooorhood bank. make it payable to yourself and mail it home.
When it is time to pull the runner, simply call the airline, book your ticket for a day or two after payday and just leave.
Unless you are planning to return to Korea for work purposes in the very near future there are NO repercussions. You are just quitting a job. You are not a slave or indentured servent. Just go.

correct. I send home over $3,000USD a month. It costs me (at KEB) about 25,000Won to do so...though...I can't complain. I am in and out in 3 minutes. It's great. |

I'm with Junior on this one. I think if someones gonna say 'Yeh I'm just tired of Korea, miss my friends back home and my boss wont let me have all my holidays off at once' then I would think that person isn't worthy of advice cause that would just be lame to leave someone in the shit who has brought you over and made an investment, more so if they have treated you nicely.
However, if they've been an ass with you from day one then screw em and put grass seeds in their carpet so that grass grows indoors Always a fun one for crappy landlords and bosses. |

yeah they've definitely been on our asses since we got here and we're sick of it.
as far as wiring money home though- we've done it with 2 different amounts before and the fee was only $5 each time. so i think it just depends on your bank. i think we'll just wire most of it and get the rest in traveler's checks i guess. trav. checks would be better than cash right? would we get the same exchange rate either way? |

| Don't worry too much about carrying large amounts of cash here - street robbery is extrememly rare, and bringing less than $10,000 out of the country is no issue. Transfer what's in your bank account to pay for your airline tickets, book a flight for the first Sunday after pay-day, take all your money out in cash right after pay-day, and then disappear. What I would strongly recommend, however, is that you and your S/O leave the boss a letter explaining exactly why you're leaving. Don't let her think you were just homesick or wimps. Let her know that you love Korea but she's a real bitch and is likely to lose future FTs because of it. |

While that is true in the majority of cases it is not true all the time. I had a friend banned for good after he pulled a midnight runner (despite my advicing against it). The boss went to Immigration and filled out some paper stating that the teacher had stole some money (which was a lie). When my friend tried to apply for Korea again he was turned down (he's now in China last I heard). The recruiter told him that he was blacklisted for having stole money.
So if you have a truly vindictive boss, there COULD be future consequences...although it's less trouble for the boss just to get another teacher. |

But wouldn't that fall under the "UNLESS you plan to return" exception??????" |
