Just read the warning on AFN about avoiding City Hall. Anyone been in the area? Guess Independence day gets the Nationalist juices flowing.

Question. Is this celebrating South Korea's independence in 1945 or from an earlier date?

If it is celebrating the 1945 indepedence from the Japanese, shouldn't they at least give the US a little bit of credit for defeating their colonial masters?

Alias,

By the same token should not the US give France a little bit of credit for helping them defeat their colonial masters in 1789....? Laughing

except for the ridicuolouness of freedom fries, the French and the USA normally get along and americans aren't raised to hate France and don't blame France for all of its problems.

Yes, August 15 it is infact victory over Japan day. I've always beileved that there are days for a queit pomp and ceremony (last post that kinda thing) and days for protesting. Tomorrow isn't a day for protesting.

The Koreans should acknowledge the US for their freedom and economic growth for sure. The 15th of August should be declared "American ass kissing day." Personally I don't know why we bothered helping them at all. Should have left the place to the Japs. They might have helped to model decent people.

I'm pretty sure he was just being sarcastic. Probably in response to the fact that many Koreans blame the US for the division of the peninsula.

Alias,

Quick question: who divided the peninsula right after WWII?
Hmm..it was the great powers of the time..the US and the USSR who divided them into zones of influence, much like Germany.
This was supposed to be temporary but became permanent when both sides refused to concede unification to the other's ideological camp.

Homer: who started the korean war? Wasn't one of those two great powers you speak of.

Who has killed more koreans since the end of the Korean war than anyone else? North Korea.

Point being this: yeah sure, the USA and USSR divided it up originally but they're not the ones keeping Korea seperate these days. They're also now the bad guys in the whole thing.

Agreed.

If it wasn't for the Soviets and the US, Japan would have been ruliling over Korea! The UN tried to have an independent government but the Communists were opposed. It is funny how some Korean radicals ignore/deny that it was the North that invaded the South.

It is also unfortunate that many young Koreans seem ignorant of the terrorist attacks against the South by the North. If they can't blame it on the US then they are not interested.

How funny. The American athletes are in much more danger than those from the North. Pure politics here.

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea has pulled out of the world university games in South Korea, citing safety concerns after anti-North protests in Seoul last week.

Problems with a chartered aircraft was the reason North Korea initially gave for the failure of its 218-member delegation to arrive in the South for the August 21-31 event.

But on Monday, the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) blamed the South for not being able to guarantee its students' safety.

"We cannot let our athletes go to a dangerous place where the participants' safety is not guaranteed," a spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland -- the organization that handles ties with Seoul -- was quoted by KCNA as saying.

The KCNA statement was reported by South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The spokesman said South Korean authorities erred by allowing an anti-North protest to continue in Seoul on August 15 while breaking up a simultaneous demonstration against the United States.

The Liberation Day protest in Seoul angered North Korea.
"The South Korean authorities should apologize officially for the August 15 riot," the KCNA report said.

This year's university games begin on Thursday in the South Korean city of Daegu with more than 11,000 athletes from 175 countries taking part in the 11-day event.

Organizers were hoping the participation of the North Koreans would attract public attention to the games' movement as well as provide peace overtures to the long-running North Korea-U.S. standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear program.

Six-nation talks aimed at resolving the nuclear crisis are set to begin in Beijing next week involving China, North Korea, the U.S., South Korea, Russia and Japan.

North Korea plays carrot and stick better than the U.S. or any other nation could ever do. They do it to South Korea every time, with economic development in the North, linked railroads, tours, reunions, joing sporting events and everything else under the sun.

They have South Korea excited about those cheerleading female robots once again (why, I have no clue) and again pull out the rug, giving the pro-NK students another excuse to protest and show their ignorance of reality. As much as I like South Korea, their attitude towards their brothers, who attack them, threaten them with a reign of fire on the peninsula, cause terrorism and do their best to keep the peninsula unstable is pathetic. South Koreans can hold a soft spot for the North Korean people but fer gawd sakes understand that the North Korean leadership doesn't give a crap about the South, what with the former's view that the Southern people are materialistic puppets of the West anyway.

Alias..no no...

This is not what we are talking about....
That event was caused by the allies( mostly the US of course) defeating Japan in WWII.
The separation of Korea came about right after WWII as an agreement between the Allies. These zones of influence were influenced by their respective parent power so they would be favorable to them. The North was funded and armed by the USSR and the South was helped by the US during that time. When the war broke out in 1950, the North asked the USSR for the go-ahead before launching the invasion. This indicates that it was not just a korean thing.
The Us intervened not out of the goodness of their hearts but to prevent communism from spreading in the region.
So Koreans independance today was bought with UN (Mostly US help) but that does not mean they should as you say "kiss US butt" (not your exact words but rather the sentiment you were conveying) every year.
Many countries received help during their fight for independance, including the US during the revolution when France lent a helping hand (for its own benefit of course) that helped turn the tide. Yet, no one would ask Americans to thank France every july fourth would they?
