Eating in a restaurant the other day, I saw this Korean music video which started off rather typically.

A boy and girl date in high school. After graduation, the girl goes on to university, but the boy is too poor to go. While he's doing manual labour, the girl enjoys bar-hopping, blind dates, and MTs ("membership training," where groups of male and female university students take a trip somewhere, spend the night, then return. Of course, absolutely no hanky-panky occurs. Ever.). Finally, our hero has scraped together enough money to go to university. He opens the door to the university library, and sees his ex-girlfriend ... 's hair get stroked by some guy she went on an MT with. With no more reason to attend, he drops out of university.

[So far, so so-so.]

While he continues working as a carpenter or something, she gets engaged. The wedding is held outside.

[Still rather typical.]

Then, during the wedding ceremony, as the happy couple are taking their vows, the ex-boyfriend DRIVES A STEAMSHOVEL

INTO THE WEDDING!! As terrified guests flee this way and that, he uses the crane-like shovel arm to DEMOLISH THE WEDDING CAKE!! Not even the table upon which the cake was sitting is safe. And finally, he uses the steamshovel's bullhorn to demand that his ex come back.

I think the video ended around the time of the blaring bullhorn.

I'm not sure, actually, because the next video was also themed with a sappy love story, so I don't know where the first ended and second began.

I saw this one years ago on tape in America, but if memory serves...

There's a guy who is a photographer and he falls in love with this girl. Many charming scenes of him photographing her as she smiles and giggles follow. But then one day she's looking through his studio (which is lovingly adorned with expertly taken photgraphs of her) when she reaches for something on a high shelf and bottle full of HAZARDOUS DEVELOPING CHEMICALS FALLS ON HER!! It splashes right in her eyes and she's blinded. The man visits her in the hospital because, as every Korean knows, it's not true love until there's a visit to the ICU. Her head is wrapped in bandages and he is distraught, shedding many a manly tear. Flash forward a few weeks and we see her walking along with full eyesight. Her vision has been restored! But how?? She walks up to a bench where her beloved is sitting. He stands up, gripping her arm, staring foward, and we realize that he's DONATED his eyeballs to her!! Right out of his head!! And he's a photographer!! At this point we go into cardiogenic shock from the sheer romance of it all. The end.

Here's another one that I didn't see but my friend told me about and it sounds great. If somebody can tell me the artist, I'd like to look it up.

There's a guy and he's in love with a girl. But the girl is a singer for some bar that is run by gangsters. I think the guy is a lowly waiter or something. Whilst the girl is singing the gangsters like to sneer and laugh and throw things at the girl. This infuriates the guy but he controls himself. One day the gangsters corner the girl in an alley and start pushing her around. By some coincidence, the guy happens upon the scene. Outnumbered by the gangsters, he goes and gets a handgun. He goes back and MURDERS FOUR PEOPLE IN COLD BLOOD. Love and happiness ensues.

Crap video. It would have been better if the guy had gone on an Al Copone style, cocaine fueled, knife welding rampage to get the eyes from someone else.

Or even better....used a STEAMSHOVEL.

You sorta get sick of all the melodramatic videos after you've seen the 1000th hapless pairing against the wishes of their family/against class divides/badboy gangsta turned good only to be torn apart by illness/war/revenge killings/stupid acts of self sacrifice.

I want a video where the girl's in distress and the guy will say:

"You want what?! Babe, there's only one part of my body that I'd put in you and it's not my eyes."

That would rock.
