Dusk, beautiful sunset, white birds gathering on the fringe of a lake, couples, friends. Walking, watching crimsom clouds, water glitter, fish spools. Sudden splash.
Big blue ball, bobbing head, black goggles. Arm after arm, churning, sloshing through the shallows of the lake, a guy in a wet suit doing laps.
"Hey!", I tried to yell. Couples didn't stir, couple of Mexicans still hugged, guy's friends at the corner of the lake, out of view. "There are gators in there!" I remonstrated to the swimmer, his body halfway out of the water now, my end of the lake.
"I know. . .I haven't seen 'em yet. . .", keeps on swimming, jaws beneath waiting.
I've honestly seen 10'-12' gators in lakes adjacent to this one, and have seen one 10' swimming in this one at dusk. So I say, what would you have done?
a) Tell him like I did?
b) Let him be?
c) Call the cops?
d) Try to help him if he got attacked?
Moreover, do you think the other people should've done anything?
I guess you have to live in Florida, USA, to know. People get killed by gators every year, some for just 'being near' water.
I'm asking these questions to decipher if you think it's another human being's responsibility to do anything in this kind of situation or not. If so, why?
I told him simply because, if he died, I would'n't have been held accountable. If I hadn't, maybe I would've, no?
Though a seemingly small thing, it made me ponder how responsible we are to each other and the wisdom it sometimes takes to warn people, if not save them.
And I've been told Korea is lacking safety consciousness. |

From Florida, too.
I think your only responsibility is to tell him. That's all.
It's his decision to do what he wants to do.
I've swam in gator occupied waters before. Probably not the smartest thing, but down there, you never know when and where gators are around.
You did your job. Now, go have an ice cream. |

Hey Benicio, where are you from in FL?
It's good to know you're in Asia now, can swim in those rivers all you want without fear of gators. I know some people can flirt with gators, fly fish and all with them around, but this guy? Just dumb.
He's swimming laps, for crying out loud! Biggest thing a gator needs to attract him is splashing.
Hear about the teenager down here who was attacked by a 12 footer and got away by sticking his thumb in its eye? |
