Is that where Philippinas get their 'missionary' visas so they can come here and teach for a year? |

A good site...thanks for the link but just a quick word of warning to the Christian ESL'er newbies out there.
In Korea, beware of the hagwons that try to pay you less money because it's "Christian." It just means they are probably making more money off of you.
A better way to go is to get a standard job (making 2 or 2.2) at a reputable hagwon or public school and get involved in a good Church. THere are plenty of English services here, especially if you are in Seoul or Pusan. |

That's some excellent advice! My first job here in Korea was at a "Christian" school that called their teachers missionaries. I had mistakenly made the assumption that since it was "Christian" and affiliated with a church, it would be a relatively safe, stable, sane place to be. I couldn't have been more wrong. The job paid almost nothing and was like living in a prison. I'm not saying all Christian schools are like this, but be cautious and do your homework well before signing anything. |

Also, not to take away anything from the well-intended site of the OP, but I remember reading an old post either on here or another site of someone speaking the same story about a christian school in Gyeongju that had similar conditions. I'd recommend putting the faith aside when looking for jobs and try to qualify christian hogwans with the same scrutiny as a non-christian school. |

those are the last people this country needs. "Christian" schools (hogwons and univs) are some of the worst offenders of the labor laws.
dont even get me going on the evangelicals that come over here and their Korean disciples, they are some of the worst people i've ever run into here |

Being Christian is just another tool to rip people off. |

I was offered a job at a Christian school in Jeju but they only offered me 1.6 and no free accommodation. Many of the other "Christian" schools offered similar conditions. No thanks. |

If you want to be a better Christian I'd suggest you get a real job and find some volunteer work to do. 'Christianity' is more of a brand name when it comes to hogwans, and not a good brand name at that.
And let me also take this opportunity to thank Jesus Christ personally that I wasn't born into a Christian Korean family. That would be worse than having family who were all Jehovah's Witnesses back home. |

All that said and done, surely there are some great Christian schools in Korea. It's good to be cautious and to question this notion of using Christianity as a "brand name" for drawing in students and teachers. But I've read reviews of several Christian schools that seemed solid with high re-signing rates for their teachers, excellent living conditions, competitive salary and benefits, and quality people. So play fair.
Don't you think this is an excellent opportunity for Christian teachers to impose standards and their own form of 'blacklisting'? Isn't this how change/improvements often come about? There are probably a fair amount of young, naive and unsuspecting Christians looking for work in Korea. Now there's finally a place to go on the Internet that can give them sound advise and guidance.
Thanks, OP, for creating a gathering place for Christians who want to teach in Korea. God bless. |
