I admit to being a newbie that might complain a little bit about life here in Korea. I have a good job and have met nothing but decent people since coming over from Canada. I have one problem though...I am often quite bored before and after work. I work late so when I get home there's not much more to life than drinking cheap beer until I am ready for bed. As I mentioned, I am from Canada so I have always been able to cope with boredom, but without drugs and easy women...I'm at a loss. I've only been here for a few months so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about making the most of my time in a country void of grass. I have been to Seoul, and it seems a little better, but I am stuck in Incheon for another 8-9 months. I like Korea for the most part, the people are always interesting and there's always something to watch, but I am tempted by countries like Thailand and Vietnam or even Cambodia or Laos because life would seem much more relaxed. Any suggestions from fellow Incheon-ers are welcome. I'll even accept the verbal backhands that a lot of Dave's posters like to dish out. Maybe it will wake me up. |

Do you know what gu or dong you are in?
There are several mountains in town to hike. On the weekends a lot of people head to Bupyeong to drink. Seoul is there for the exploring on weekends as well.
Check out some festivals that are going on this weekend:

Why live in Incheon when you can work in Shinchon, Kangnam, or Chamsil?
All it takes is time and effort..you can find a decent area to live in. |

Don't go to Goose Goose, the foreigners there pick fights. Most of my friends avoid the place entirely. |
BTW - Does anyone know if they still have trivia nights there? How about this coming week (Chuseok)? |

Yes, Incheon has almost no redeeming qualities. However
here are two:
1/ Proximity to Seoul
2/ Proximity to Deokjeokdo (big party there next weekend)

BTW: Goose Goose sucks. Everyone who is anyone goes to
"Rock Bar" now. Same street a little further down on the 3rd
floor. (past the Chinese restaurant) |

Again, it really depends who you ask. There are a lot of people who will say it sucks. However, most of those people are the ones who are in their 20's, party a lot and like to go clubbing every weekend.
If your older and/or you don't care about a hardcore nightlife, Incheon is not bad. The things that Incheon for me personally that are lacking are A) a good bookstore and B) having a Costco nearby (the nearest one I know if is Yeongdeungpo Office).
Also, some of the areas are better then others in terms of air pollution. My area isn't bad, but I've taken the bus to areas near industrial sections of the city that are terrible. Of course, the air in Seoul is just as bad.
It depends on what your priorities are. |

So... I guess if I'm 22 and I like to go out at night that Incheon is not the plac for me. I am used to Philly, which is also a small-big city. Is there any comparable cities in North america as far as night-life for young people? Also, how is it to just take the train to Seoul every weekend? |

There's a nightlife in Incheon. It's just that it's, naturally, Korean centered nightlife. There are many, many Hofs. If you want to bar hop or meet other foreigners, go to Seoul.

The subway stops running at around midnight. But if you're 22, you shouldn't have any problem staying out until 5 or 6 am when they start back up again.

When I lived there, there was a hockey league of foreigners that met up in Yeonsu-dong at Dae Dong World. Some of those foreigners also had a soccer league, but I haven't lived there for a couple of years, so I don't know if those activities are still going on. |

I live in Incheon near the port which means that instead of just getting mistaken for a Canadian I am just as often mistaken for a Russian.
The good thing about Incheon is that it's close and cheap to get to Seoul, but this is also a bad thing about Incheon, because it means that many people just go to Seoul for the weekend so it probably has less western related nightlife than a city of the same size. Bupyeong is the centre although the Arts center is nicer, Juan is OK, and Gyesan is good. It has that 'Wild Bills' place.
Overall you can probably get a better job in Incheon because people don't want to live there. I don't see any reason why it should be considered as any worse than an outer suburb of Seoul appart from the heavy industry. However that is made up for by the fact that you're by the sea and can get ferries to China, Jeju and other islands.
They're also building a massive brand new city that I expect will be a prefered place to work in a few years.
Oh, and people didn't mind living in Incheon when Pentaport was on!
Check out my page it has some Incheon info on it:

I haven't met the most outgoing teachers here (maybe they hate the place) but it'll do for the weekdays. I usually like to get away on the weekends to some nearby islands or make a trip down to Seoul which is only a train line away.
Create your own adventure I'd say. |
