Around the corner from Burger King in Itaewon is a small mobile phone shop run by Mr. Choi. Phones with basic features are 120,000-150,000. Phones with more advanced features are 200,000-600,000. All are pre-paid because the phone companies told him to stop selling contract phones. The phone companies have been burned too many times by ESL teachers and GIs who leave with country with large, outstanding bills - far more than the 200,000 won deposit. He is fairly fluent and spent a long time with me explaining the various features of the phone I bought. Apparently all the phones are used and don't come with manuals. The application process is about 20 minutes. YOU DON'T NEED A RESIDENT CARD OR EVEN A VISA. ALL YOU NEED IS A PASSPORT.
