Hello! I will soon be in Korea and have a question about money. I have heard it is hard for a foreigner to open a bank account. So, when i recieve a paycheck, can i just take it to a bank, cash it, get cashier's check and send it back home to be deposited in my account? |

Getting a bank account is a piece of cake. Go in, Bring your alien registration card( You should get it a week or two after you arrive) and you may need your passport too, but people at the bank will hook you up.
Most schools require a bank account for your pay to be direct depsoited, anyway. There's tons of info on sending money home in the FAQ's |

I opened mine at the Korea Exchange Bank at Incheon airport. I'd only just stepped off the plane, and didn't even have an alien registration card. I just needed to sign a few forms and show them my passport. They gave me a delightful gold cash card and I also paid all my American traveller's cheques in. I withdrew 50,000 WON 5 minutes later. Easy! |

My boss did it for me - all I had to do was sign and choose a pin for my bank card. It was nice cause I didn't have to go through the whole waygook dance of trying to mime what I want. Probably the most hassle-free way of getting it done would be to get your boss to go with you, it will only take minutes that way. |

does anyone know if there are foreign banks in korea? i've never seen one but...
for safeguard reasons, really. if the fire gets rollin' then you can always access your account in another land. i'm not sure how things would go if something serious started out here. perhaps all the money in korean banks would be frozen...? and do you think you'd have time to access your account in all teh chaos? |
