I think it comes down to who uses the best cheese(s). Wisconsin and Vermont traditionally both claim to have the best U.S. cheese. According to the latest "World Cheese Awards" (truly an international competition...) the best U.S. Cow's milk cheese was some exotic-sounding Parmesan made by Antigo Cheese Co. in Antigo, Wisconsin. The best U.S. Chedder cheese was from Vermont (Cabot Creamery...)

However, the best mozzarella cheeses in the U.S. apparently come from California (Fresno area) and Pennsylvannia (brown Swiss cows...)

Anyway, New York is closer to both Vermont and Pennsylvnia than Chicago is to Wisconsin and California - to make a weak case based on proximity to best cheeses...

Then again, both Chicago and New York city (and New Jersey...) have great Mafia traditions so they both figure to have great Sicilian pizzas...

Actually, I can still vaguely remember going to the 1964 World's Fair when it was in Flushing, N.Y. and having an amazing pizza from the Wisconsin exhibit. There was a veritable mountain of melted cheese on that pie!... Cool

i had a papa john's garden special tonight. it was so delicious. they put on tonnes of olives and big chunks of tomatoes. very satisfying.

One thing I liked was the lack of grease.

The box was still pretty much greaseless after eating the pieces.

That impressed me.
