I am tentatively scheduled to return to Korea early next month. I expect to have my E-2 visa in my passport.
Given that, must I have an onward ticket? Or do I only need one if I don't have a visa?

Anybody know the facts?

When you check in with your airline, they will require to see your onward ticket (usually). If you dont' have one, they'll make you buy one before they allow you to board the plane. Especially if you're flying Air Canada.

I flew to Korea via Air Canada at the end of December with no onward ticket and they couldn't have cared less either way. They said "what is your final destination" and I said "Korea". They weighed my bags, and told me to enjoy my time here. I had the E-2 already in my passport and that is all they were concerned with.

If you have an E-2 visa in your passport you don't need an onward ticket...

You only need an onward ticket if you don't have an E2 visa and are coming over on a tourist one

Worst case scenario: just buy an onward ticket at the airport and put it on a credit card. Make sure you buy a full-priced, fully-refundable ticket and just cancel it when you get here.

I had a forwarding ticket last time with my tourist stamp. No one asked to see my ticket.

There are cracks in the system.

And I had a fake ticket that I had to present to the ticket agent for my domestic connecting flight as well as my international flight to Korea. Lots of cracks.

I got into the country from China without an E-2 and a return ticket. I just told the immigration officer I was going to moving onto Japan in a few weeks on the ferry.

A friend of mine had her E2 visa in her passport and was going to fly to Korea on Air Canada, Ottawa to Toronto to Seoul.

She was not allowed to board her first flight from Ottawa to Toronto because she didn't have an onward ticket. Of course, she argued and argued with the woman until finally she was allowed to go through, but only after missing the flight to Toronto because a chain of supervisors had to be called.

The Air Canada agent was wrong, but because Air Canada is a horrible airline there could be problems. Staff are apparently not well trained and they also hate having customers and really, really want to lose money.

I did however get into Korea without an onward ticket or a visa last week on Vietnam airlines. They asked a few questions but I just smiled and said I was visiting a friend and wasn't sure when I was leaving and it was no prob.
