My artist: Four Tet

Four Tet is the name used by Kieran Hebden for his electronic music-oriented solo efforts to differentiate from his work with post-rock band Fridge.

Four Tet is highly respected in many parts of Europe (most notably in Hebden's native Britain) as an original and talented experimental electronic artist, but remains relatively unknown in the United States. Hebden's solo work typically incorporates samples lifted from various sources including hip-hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk mixed with his own guitar playing. Four Tet shares some stylistic similarities with other musicians, such as Prefuse 73, who use computer editing techniques that give the music a staccato, cut-up feel. Hebden's music is notable for its rich, organic sounds and harmonious melodies as well as for eschewing the traditional pop-song format in favor of a more abstract approach.

If you like that Scott Herren (Prefuse 73) cut up, melodic sounding stuff then you will probably like ediT on Planet-Mu.

Here's his myspace page as well. http://www.myspace.com/edit
The tracks on the myspace page are kind of average remixes though and have nothing on the "Crying For Pros Over No Reason" album.

I also dug The Books "Thought For Food" album which is kind of similar but a lot more organic and less digital, DSP sounding.
Can't be bothered finding a link to clips from that album but here's a link to there other stuff>>> http://www.boomkat.com/search.cfm
And here's a review>>> http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/the-books/thought-for-food.htm

Oh yeah, photographers can be artists. Most aren't however.

If you believe otherwise, I don't think you understand what constitutes an artist and the creative endeavor.

It's a bit like how pretty much anyone can draw and paint but not everyone can be considered a serious painter. Most people can point a video camera at something but not everyone qualifies as a Director. Most people can bang 2 sticks together but not many can call themselves a musician. Most people put clothes on every morning but not everyone is a fashion designer. Most people can write but they can't always call themselves a poet/writer etc. etc.

Well I checked out the two or three mentions in this thread that were new to me. My favorite so far would be I Am Robot and Proud. Also found some other noteworthy artists in the process:

Drive like Jehu
Onelinedrawing
Teitur

And I'd like to mention Loudon Wainwright III. Incredible folk music if you're into that.

"The Incredible String Band", a seventies ultra hippy cosmic spaced out folk/world music band. Deeply deeply deeply surreal imagery in the lyrics, and a totally unique psychedelic mystical ethnice twist to thier sound. Totally one of a kind, and not at all as cheesy as the description sounds, really...

I love Four tet!! Kieran is someone who I deeply respect and draw inspiration from. My other choice would have to be Madlib, who under many various aka's has managed to become the modern day jazz experimentalist with a raw, digital sound. I love this man's stuff and respect him for actually being able to play many instruments in a very capable manner despite his penchant for ripping jazz and funk samples from the olden days of the best New Orleans has to offer. Prefuse 73 is by far my favorite producer, though. Uprock Narratives and One Word Extinguisher are classics to me.

I downloaded Beat konducta album from Madlib. Awesome beats. They sounded similar to some other stuff I've heard, so I checked out his Wikipedia page and it seems he has worked with MF Doom and IS Quasimoto. Badass.

Ooh nice one...Fennesz is really good. "Venice" was the last album I really go into.

Matthew Herbert is great as well. The Matthew Herbert Big Band stuff is worth a listen.

What about Matmos? That might be my suggestion for today. Interesting stuff.
