Hey,

Your help would be greatly appreciated. The wife and I are off to Boracay next week for 6 days or so. I know there is a ton of hotels/resorts on Boracay and I was wondering if anyone here had any personal reccomendations. We're not looking for 5 star but reasonable prices either on the beach or close to. Cottage/hut style maybe... any reccomendations are greatly appreciated!!

Get off the airplane (I assume you are flying into Caticlan and NOT Kalibo) and IGNORE the touts at the airport. If anyone asks where you are staying simply say Nigi-Nigi.

Take a trike down to the terminal. Pay the driver 20 pesos for the ride.
Go into the boat terminal. You will see a window to get your ticket.
Get your tickets and get onto the boat. DO NOT let anyone help you with your bag.

Announcement
As per Municipal Ordinance No. 230, Series of 2005, all guests entering Boracay Island will be required to pay PhP 50 per person as Environmental and Admission fee which will be collected by representative(s) of the office of the municpal mayor at the port of Caticlan or at the Fairways and Bluewater Welcome Center.

This is in addition to the PhP 40 terminal fee already being collected as well at the Caticlan jettyport. And so, guests are well-advised to prepare exact change in paying for these local gov
ernment-imposed fees to minimize hassle and long queues.

Take the boat over to Boracay.

Get off the boat and take a walk down the beach road. You will see signs all over for cheap rooms. Prices range from php500 and up to p5000.

You can convert WON to pesos there but the rate is NOT good (450 pesos = 10,000 won.) If you have the choice, take US$ and be sure to change about 100k won here into pesos BEFORE you go. Get the SMALLEST bills you can (p100 and p500). Most places will have trouble cashing anything larger than 100's.

One of the best places on the beach is the Boracay regency. Cost is about US$100 per night.

Next door is Nigi-Nigi Noo Noos. Cost is about $40. These are cottage style, include breakfast and they have the best happy hour on the beach. I would recommend staying here for your first night so you can settle and get your feet on the ground and have a good look around. Then you can change if you want.

On the cheap end you can try A-Rock. They are back a bit off the beach and are about $25 per night. You can also go to the Casa Camila (decent too) or Alices. Ali

We have stayed at all 3 (and a few others). If you want to get a room in another hotel, be sure to LOOK at the room BEFORE you pay for it. Check for HOT/cold water in the room if you think you want it (many have taps but not the hot water). Same with TV. Most don't (there is nothing to watch unless they have satellite or you speak Tagalog).

If you want to go Filipino style you can find places from as little as $10 but no aircon and NOT on the beach.

You can have a look at the resorts and amenities.

I just went with a tout on the boat. He was pleasant, not pushy at all. I liked the third place he showed me (all in easy walking distance from the pier). Bungalow, aircon, hot water, pool, 5 minutes from the beach, under $20. He was happy with a small tip & undoubtedly got a kickback from the hotel too.

Great little island. Have fun!
