My MegaMart sells canned ones. What city are you in?

SE Asian foodstores in Osan and Pyeongtaek, as well as the grocer by Whatthebook in Itaewon all have dried chickpeas.

LotteMart and Lotte Department Stores usually carry them. I was in the Myeong-dong Lotte Department Store on Sunday, and they were on the shelves with the canned fruit. They weren't outrageously expensive either.

"...on the outskirts of Seoul..." where? North/south/east/west? How far on the outskirts?

There's a shop in Gangnam called Star Super that sells (somewhat overpriced) canned chickpeas. I think it's between Dogok and Maebong stations on the Orange Line. (I ride my bike there, so I don't really pay attention to the subway stops...)

There's a shopping center in Ilsan called Lake Shopping. In the basement there's a little shop that sells all kinds of imported goods, you *might* find chickpeas there.

BTW heydelores - the Jamshil Lotte Mart doesn't carry them. (Nor do they carry canned tomatoes, but that's another rant...)

If you find 'em someplace else, let us know. Good luck.

Yee-HAW!

Shinsegae Department Stores are quite common, and the one at Express Bus Terminal carries them, so I'm guessing the others would.

The one in Gwangju does too, so that seems to be a good guess.

Are you thinking of "tahini" (sesame seed paste) or "tabouli" (diced veggies, spices and steamed grains)?
I never buy tahini, because sesame seeds are cheap as hell, and when I throw them in my blender with the chickpeas, it amounts to the same thing.

I saw dried chickpeas in Itaewon, but I don't recall if I saw tahini or not, so I am not sure about making hummus in Korea. I did buy some dried ones, but I need to look for some tahini. I prefer the canned ones that are not dried. I don't recall seeing any in my city. I live in Cheonan. Would E-Mart in Seoul have it? I am sure I could easily go there since it is near Yongsan Station.

At least one of the two stores close to Itaewon now has tahini. It's not as cheap as back home, as I was told that the taxes are really high on it. I requested tahini a few months ago as I was surprised that they hadn't yet started selling it (there is an Arab community), and one store owner promised me that he would look to ship it from Dubai. It didn't take long. Smile

Mr. Atassi, the fellow above was suggesting just throwing in sesame seeds. Does that work? I know tahini is sesame paste. If that is the case, I would do that rather than spending a fortune on tahini.
I didn't see tahini. I looked in those Indian supermarkets in the itaewon area as they seem to be the only foreign supermarkets. What is needed is one of those mediterranean markets that have chick peas, tahini, and feta cheese from Greece, Bulgaria, and France.

I would love some feta cheese. That'd be great. Kalamata and Alfonso olives would also be nice to have.

I don't know about using dried sesame seeds in hummous. It may work, or it may be or taste slightly different. I would think that much of the flavor would be in the oil, so if the seeds are dried first they may lose the strong flavor they have otherwise.

Maybe someone else knows more about if it's different.
