Does anyone know what those day-glo orange flowers are along the side of the roads? They have long stems, few leaves and the most vivid blossoms. Almost as nice as the fields of cosmos. |

I don't know the Korean name for them but I heard it simply means 'flowers by the side of the road'. Cool, huh? |

I hope it sounds better in Korean than it does in English. |

TF's post reminded me:
I saw the Devil's trumpet/ Angel's trumpet at Moran market. I could smell it from miles away. I bent down to try and lift up the flower head and I was slapped by the flower vendor. She shouted something in Korean at me. I went to point to it to verify its name, and my pointed hand was slapped. I walked away very peeved. Then I thought that touching the stem might have damaged the flowers. I started to forgive hte woman. When I got home, I looked up the word she was shouting at me- 'poisonous'. Turns out these suckers are in the datura family.
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brugmansia
They are known as Angel's Trumpets, sharing that name with the closely related genus Datura. The genus differs from Datura in being perennial and woody (Datura species are herbaceous), and in having pendulous (not erect) flowers.
As with Datura, all parts of Brugmansia are highly toxic. The plants are sometimes ingested for recreational or shamanic intoxication as the plant contains the tropane alkaloids scopolamine and atropine; however because the potency of the toxic compounds in the plant is variable, the degree of intoxication is unpredictable and can be fatal.
Ya-Ta- I'm very good with flowers- can you post a picture of yours/ give a few more details? How many petals, what type of leaves, what kind of center etc...? Is it a blossom or a flower? |

Ummm...none of the ones posted so far, although they are all nice. I could see painting those trumpet flowers; those are nifty, but I haven't seen any around the road sides here.
Wish I could post a pic. My computer maengness is raising it's nasty head again.
PS: There's a difference between a flower and a blossom? |

Blossom- the flower of a plant/tree that bears fruit.
Is it this? I saw it on the way to school today, on the side of the road.
Marigold or 금잔화 Google it- there are so many variations on a theme! |

We've got a fair number of black-eyed susans blooming 'round the carpark - they sort of match your description.

OK. I went back and checked out the whole plant again so I could do a better job of describing it. Here goes:
1. Some of the plants are as tall as 4'.
2. The stems are skeletal. Really thin and long.
3. VERY few leaves and what there are are scattered.
4. The flower (not blossom , thank you for that clarification) is a brilliant orange. I stood by the side of the road--at the risk of my life (actually only my posterior was at risk from the passing cars, but I put a lot of value on that part of my anatomy)--and counted petals. Most have 10 petals. Five of the petals are on top and the other layer are off-set 50% just below them so there is a uniform circular shape. They are 'flat', unlike a marigold which I think are more spherical. I counted the petals on 7 flowers and MOST of them had the 5 and 5 arrangement. A couple were one petal off either way.
From any distance, you don't notice the stems and flowers...just these bright, intense orange flowers.
These flowers are a SERIOUS orange, but if you look closely, they start out with a yellow overlaying at the center that fades out the farther from the center you get.
I was serious about the day-glo color. In bright sunlight, the orange is hard to look at directly.
The center is yellow, with little brown (stamens??? are those the longer part?) sticking up.
Absolutely no scent. |

There are, apparently, orange cosmos - the garden variety are generally shorter than the wild which range between 4 and 6 feet. Not sure if they meet your petal configuration tho'.
A shot of the wild version:

BINGO
So they are just a color variation of Cosmos, hunh? Fancy that.
I took a photograph of a butterfly on one and have been painting it all week, trying to get something not embarrassing. But the whole time, I didn't want to call it "Butterfly on an Orange Road-side Flower". Somehow that just lacked the pizzazz I was looking for.
Thank you!
(Maybe my local variety is suffering from lack of love. That would explain the healthier, more prolific, petal numbers you have in that pic. But that is definitely the flower I have been working on.) |
