That's true. Libya's also on my list for whenever I ever get over to see the Middle East / Arab world, which is wasn't before. A lot of countries would do the world a lot of good by just 'giving up their war' as Joo often puts it; it's just how to bring about that change of mind that's the problem.

It suposedly has some of the best roman ruins around, with Leptis Magna being the "crown jewel" of them.

I agree! Well said!

Let's hope America too (the biggest military spender around by far) also starts putting money towards her run down educational system instead of a few more ICBMs and their billlions of dollar upkeep.

I'm always amazed at the fact that America daily in training exercises shoots off millions of dollars of armnaments, some "each" worth millions of dollars. They just land in the sea.

Someone quoted Joo's famous line "if they'd just give up their war". I think the proper phrasing should be "if each country would just give up their own war." . It is not about anyone winning.

Oh I'm so sorry, it's not about the US or muslims...therefore it's not news worthy.

Personally I think this is nice news. A Libyan friend of mine told me that in his time there you were not even allowed to own a typewriter without a special licence, and now they want to hook kids up to the internet. Sweet.

This is a disorder similar to OCD on display.

This is exactly why I said "why did you post this". I knew why she posted it.

An article about Lybian educational policy invariably leads to our resident proselytizer to bring America into the discussion. Forver and always, they have but one response.

From a freshman-level text I am using to teach how propaganda works and what it aims to do...

Quote:
1. Portrayal of [ABC] in the best possible light.
2. Portrayal of [XYZ] in the worst possible light.
3. Portrayal of [ABC's cause] as just.
4. Portrayal of [XYZ's cause] as unjust.
5. Message to civilians that they are involved in the war in important ways and their [pro-ABC and anti-XYZ] opinions need to be heard.
6. Communication of a sense of urgency/immediate danger to civilians.

Now, this text was treating U.S. propaganda during the First World War. "ABC" was mostly the United States and Britain; and "XYZ" was mostly Germany.

This changed in other contexts. CIA's propaganda campaigns in Italy and Chile, for example: substitute the United States and the Christian Democrats for "ABC"; substitute the Soviets, Cuba, Castro, and Salvador Allende for "XYZ."

The reason I used "ABC" and "XYZ" here was to answer BJWD's question in as comprehensive a manner possible.

Big_Bird's pattern of article selection and posting here on this board shows that she is very much engaged in a propaganda campaign of her own making.

Assign, generally, "the United States," "the Republicans," "W. Bush," or "Israel" to the XYZ variable; assign "Hezbollah," "Hamas," "Hugo Chavez," "Tehran," and any number of other U.S. opponents, including Sean Penn, to ABC.

And there you go.

Sometimes she tries to go about it subtly, like in this thread, which seems to have set up number two by implicit comparison, above. But, in any case, there is nothing more to knowing her purposes than that...

BJWD: Oh yeah, one other thing: when called on this she usually responds with crude denials, ridicule, and other pseudorefutation. So do not be put off by that. Wink

Uh, it's a current event? Are you the final authority on what is a current event?

To the current event topic, the picture I saw of the computer was pretty cool. $100 for a portable Linux box? It might prove to be the thing to out cool Apple iBooks. They'll have to work hard to keep them out of the hands of the iPodder crowd.
