Dose anyone know where I might find an affordable film scanner here in Korea? The only ones I can find are the professional models that cost more than a million Won. I'm looking for the Minolta Dual Scan III (I think I got the name right) but can't seem to find it. Any photography buffs here that can enlighten me? |

A million won is excessively expensive for a film scanner. I don't know why they are so scarce here. It may be that because Korea has been so quick to move to digital photography that film scanners never caught on big.
I would order one from North America. Alternatively, you could buy a good flatbed scanner with a negative/slide light built into it. These were becoming very common in Canada when I left, and the quality wasn't bad. If you are thinking of buying a digital camera eventually, you might also look at models such as Nikon's Coolpix line, which let you add a slide/negative adapter tray as an accessory.

I thought about ordering from Canada or the States but I'm worried about repairs if it should break. Korean Customs will also charge me 10% tax on an item like that. Which is not bad, actually, considering I would have to pay almost 20% if I bought it at a store in my home of Newfoundland.
I've thought about getting a digital camera but I already have enough camera stuff to carry around. Besides, the only digital I'd consider would be a digital SLR and they're very expensive.
I also considered Yongsan but I got burned there one time. I bought a photo printer imported directly from Japan because the salesman assured me I could download English or Korean software from the Internet. I couldn't get the software so I called Sony in Japan. They said that model of printer isn't allowed to be sold outside of Japan and I should bring it back for a refund. The store wouldn't give me a refund so I had to take something else instead.
Thank you for your help. |

Difficult to find. I tried to pick one up in Hongkers, and couldn't even find it there (there were stores that carried it, but they were sold out). It was for a friend, and he ended up getting a Canon (sorry forget model #) actually in Korea. Korea is nightmarish for photo stuff in terms of both product availability and price. If you're planning on making a trip anytime soon, do it then. |

Do you happen to remember where he got the Canon film scanner? I'm not too fussy about the brand name as long as the quality is half decent for a reasonable price and there is after-service available in Korea. |
