I cannot access the Toronto Sun (www.torontosun.com) website. This is the second time in about a month this has happened. I can access the site through a proxy server, but that is a little slow and inconvenient.

A call to my ISP (Korea Telecom) resulted in them blaming the Toronto Sun web site (which is odd because Koreans hardly ever blame things on others). However, since I CAN see the site, I know its working fine.

Is anyone else having this problem? IS it a KT thing, or is it a Korea wide block on the Sun?

The problem is that a lot of people in the world are stupid. Whoever is hosting the site has blocked Korea from accessing the site. Generally what happens is that they (the server) has been a victim of some form of attack and a lot of the IPs came from Korea. Instead of fixing their security problems they blame it on entire countries and feel it is perfectly OK to block traffic from those countries. Kind of like Americans who won't ship internationally because a friend of a friend of a cousin's friend's neighbour was taken by the Nigeria scam. It's not just the Toronto Sun who's stupid, try accessing the US Marine Core site, and they're stationed here. Laughing

The questions still remains...what ISP do you use, and can you access the site?

It is one of two things, a) the Koreans are blocking us from seeing the site (or at least KT is) b) or the Sun has blocked IPs coming in from Korea.

This is what I am trying to figure out so I know whom to contact.

I'm using KT, and no I can't. I've come across numerous sites that I couldn't access from Korea, and it's highly unlikely that KT is banning them. For example, the Oregon office of the Better Business Bureau. Or random jewelry sites. There are tons of them.

This kind of filtering happens all the time. Atspace.com blocks Japanese IPs. Why? Who knows...probably the same reason.

If KT says they aren't blocking the site, they probably aren't. KT never shows up on the crappy ISP watch lists. That's not to say they aren't blocking, but why the Sun? KT doesn't even filter or throttle torrent sites.

You're right--I still haven't answered your question, but I have a strong suspicion it's not KT. Remember it's not the Sun, but their hosting company. Find out who hosts the Sun's website and contact them. Get their level one techs on the phone and find out (the customer service people won't know).

I just got off the phone with KT. They can't access it either. In his words, there is 'some problem' and he'll get back to me tomorrow.

So we'll see what happens.

If the block is on the other side, other Korean ISPs shouldn't be able to get through, right?

Possibly. It may be that the security threat they're reacting to was from a KT IP range, in which case it's possible that only KT customers would be affected.

I couldn't get it either.

Just checked it out to see what you were talking about.

I'm not on KT.

Here is the response I got from the Toronto Sun:

Unfortunately, [we have] been the focus of some hacker attacks originating from Korea in the past few weeks. We are upgrading our security systems to solve the problem but, in the meantime, we have been forced to block certain IP addresses. We estimate that we'll be back to normal in 60-90 days. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience.

Way to go, netizens Rolling Eyes

In the meantime, why not read a real source of news?

Maybe you can get someone to hack their server and open it up to Korean IP's again ?

as I was reading this, it was becoming apparent that the Toronto Sun was responsible for your difficulties and not KT, and I thought, "well that's got to be frustrating for this guy because now he can't blame Korean people for the problems in his life" but then right at the end you say "way to go netizens" and I'm thinking "yay! he found a way!"

Maybe The Sun fiendishly and incorrectly labeled the East Sea as "The Sea of Japan" like the foreign, Japan-loving scum they are.

Yeah, that's what I wanna know -- why did Netizens target The Sun's website?

Canadians (and, by extension, the Canadian press) are such unassuming, polite creatures.
