That "bulgogi" looked suspiciously like "bibimbap," except that the egg was raw, not fried. Is it possible that he got his "strange foreign foods" mixed up? Nahhh ...

By the way, is the bar in Apgujeong called "Uncle Tom's Cabin" still open? It's been going strong for several years, hasn't it?

A bit crass and not particularly funny. Note to self: never try to imitate the sound of another language unless you know what you're doing or you look like an ass.

Normally I love Stephen Colbert. I'll admit that up front.
That said, I'm not sure this was the best writing. I don't have a problem with his pronunciation though-- to make this funny, you could either have him do an incredible job, or have him butcher it mercilessly. I think he was being deliberately awful.

I think the "foreign foods are gross" angle was pretty crass though.

As for the claim that Colbert is racist toward Asians because of his impression while drinking the tea, I don't think it's "in good taste" but plenty of people do silly impressions of Scots, for instance, and it's just goofing around, no harm intended.

oh ffs, so we can't even poke fun at people's food anymore? Or is it just the white folks who aren't allowed to, whilst open season continues for the Koreans et al. dissing everyone else's cuisine? (Does anyone know how to get off this PC carnival ride, btw?)

Aw, that's not what I meant. I just thought it was a pretty grade-school kind of "Ewwwww!" joke, and a badly researched one (raw egg on bulgogi? maybe on dol sot bibimbab...) If they had taken a jab at bundaegi, I might have been chuckling.

Do you remember the context of that clip? It wasn't him making fun of Asians; he was making fun of some jackass who had been caught really doing something like that.

He's a satirist. What he's making fun of is not the subject but the viewpoint on it. You can't criticise him for that without missing the point.

Rolling Eyes

You are a moron.

Consider the following points:

1. The Colbert Report is a news program that is produced by and aired on THE COMEDY CENTRAL channel. This is not the McNeil-Lehrer News Report or NPR. It's meant to be tasteless and sophomoric.

2. It doesn't really matter what episode you watch. The premise of the Colbert Report is simple: find a "news" topic, perhaps a semi-related guest. Make topic, guest, and/or host Stephen Colbert look moronic. Ha, ha. Funny!

3. If you're that worried about what a group of people MIGHT think if they MIGHT see this, maybe you should make a disclaimer video clip and send it in to the show. Maybe then Stephen Colbert can make fun of you too. And a lot of Koreans like to laugh at stupid white people, so maybe they'll forget about the Kim Jong-Il stuff.

4. Perhaps you aren't aware of this, but one facet of American culture is satire. In fact, it's how a lot of people deal with serious, stressful situations. It's also how a lot of people relax at the end of another crappy day. Anyway, an awful lot of American comedy uses international crises for fodder. Thus if you watch SNL, adult swim, or pretty much any other show ever to air on Comedy Central, you'll find a lot of clips that might be considered derogatory if one does not have a sense of humor or an understanding of satire. Or, I suppose, if you are a terrorist with a sensitive side. Words can hurt, you know.

Anyway, think about it, search your soul, and then honestly answer this question:

PS You're worse than Stephen Colbert. More insulting than the actual show, you ASSUME that Korean-Americans or Korean visitors don't have the brains to figure out that only Kim Jong-Il (and maybe Colbert) is truly being laughed at. They aren't making fun of ALL Koreans.

A lot of people in North Korea would love to eat raw-egg "bulgogi" right now. Plus, everyone knows that white people can't learn Korean. Rolling Eyes

Pfft, most mainstream US humour these days revolves around the ignorant stereotyping of non-Americans. Some of it is still funny, but if I hear another gag referring to British teeth and/or accents, I'll puke.

Another one of those unfair generalizations about unfair generalizations. how many times are people going to post these kinds of things before they see the irony in it?

The first part of his post was indeed a generalisation about what mainstream US humour revolves around. Dont know how true it is. But as for the second part, generalisations in humour are only funny if they are somewhat connected to the truth. English people havent had bad teeth for a long long time, so it`s just lazy humour that is not very funny any more. I think that`s the point.

Kermo, here's the 'Tea' clip in context http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSLDscnhNCM

Who is this clip making fun of? Was it O'Reilly that got caught making racist comments when he though the cameras weren't rolling?

Wow, stunning that so many people aren't familiar with satire.

From wikipedia, because I'm lazy:

"The method of the satirist is to pretend to approve of the practices, people, and ideas that he intends to ridicule, or debunk. The satirist sidles up to his enemy with a friendly smile, and then slips a knife in his ribs so sharp that his victim (who is never as clever as his attacker) cannot tell where, or even IF he has been stabbed"

Anyone who saw him skewer Bush during the latest White House Press Corps dinner should recognize the above as Colbert's technique. Unfortunately, the Press Corps dinner tirade fell a bit short of the mark because Colbert's ironic cues (the verbal raised eybrows/ nudge, nudge wink wink that reveal a satirist's intention) were a little too broad, allowing even Dubya to perceive that he was being made fun of.

In the clip, Colbert, in the tradition of great American satirists like Mark Twain, is ridiculing the entrenched attitudes that permit these racsist stereotypes to be used as comedy. You know, attitudes held by guys llike the Republican knob who made the "Mukkakka" comment about a non-white at one of his political gatherings. I think a lot of people find these clips offensive because in them, Colbert's ironic cues are too subtle, leading viewers to believe that he holds the attitudes he is trying to ridicule.

A similar thing happened to me on the weekend, at a party. A woman came out of the bathroom complaining that "some guy" had left a few drops of urine on the toilet seat.

"Not me," I shouted, "I pissed in the sink."

Stunned silence, except for my buddy, the apartment's owner, who had a good chuckle. But he's from Regina, where pissing in the sink is OK, I guess.

Anyone who is familiar with his work knows Colbert isn't a moron.

The OP, on the other hand.....

doesn't.

Yeah, racist against Hungarians too! Rolling Eyes

I hate to be mean, but maybe it's not a very large facet of American culture.

It seems there are still a lot of Americans who don't get it. Satire seems a much more popular form of humour to Canadians. Don't get me wrong--I'd take the Colbert Report over Royal Canadian Air Farce any day. Proportionally there's a much larger audience for satire shows up north; remember that the Daily Show and Colbert Report are simulcast on CTV, a major national network.

Mr. Ah Jee, there isn't any context in that clip that would clue me in about who he was making fun of. I searched Bill O'Reilly on Youtube but couldn't find the alleged blooper.
