I don't care much about my salary, but it would have to be over 2 million, no matter what the vacation time is. The only way I would let it fall under that is if I only had to work 3 to 4 hours a day, or even get a 3 day weekend to supplement it if I want, or be lazy if I want Smile

Now, I am making 2.2 with 6 weeks contract vacation time (6-8 weeks actual vacation time) not counting the 9 day vacation I had for Chuseok or any days I can take off due to it being a public school.

The salary goes up to 2.4 next Feb though.

Cubanlord, I don't know how to answer your question. But to the other poster, is that how much vacation I could expect if I were to work for a public school? I don't recall reading anywhere that public school teachers get that much vacation. Just curious should I work in a public school some day.

There are other factors in the public school system that people need to be aware of. There's a colleague of mine here in town that works at a public school. He shows up in the morning, sits in class for about an hour without doing *anything*, then gets up for five minutes and does verbal drilling. His "teaching" day is over at 1pm, but he's still expected to put in two hours of "work" (i.e. sitting there with a novel) until 3pm. It's unfulfilling, frustrating, and boring.

Not every public school is like this, but for some people who've come over here and want to *teach*, they've found their public school jobs to be vastly unfulfilling.

I'd sure take 2.0 and 8 weeks over 2.4 and two weeks.

This wasn't a thread about public vs private, tons of those. Smile

But if you get a public school outside of the main recruiting agencies, it's likely to happen. I started at 4 weeks vacation, but it went up (along with my salary). And last winter I got an extra 3 weeks off because there was nothing to do. Several people on this board to get it. Most don't, but most go through GEPIK, EPIK, etc. But even they can if the principal doesn't mind them leaving when there is nothing to do.

I hate this argument. I wish people would stop using it. 4 hours of teaching and 4 hours of planning, reading, studying or even sleeping time as opposed to the usual 6-7 hours of pure teaching in a hagwon. Seriously, it's not a hard decision. Not to mention, if people were a bit brighter, they would find a way to constructively use that time, or atleast waste it here. Smile Most hagwon workers are at the school for 7 hours anyways, if we are talking about the average hagwon as compared to the average public school. ONE HOUR DIFFERENCE per day, I can deal with that not to deal with a hagwon.

As for the teaching being unsatisfying, that is true. It depends completely on the school, which is no different than a hagwon, though the chances of being a real teacher are higher in a public school as they are not financially driven. One last thing is the class size. I am lucky, maximum 22 at the moment (small school), but it can be between 35 and 45, which I teach at my part time job. It can be daunting, especially to a newbie.

My vacation time in the contract is 14 days, but I am at a public school and have an understanding that we get 6 weeks. If you have it written in your contract Lao I will try for that in mine when/if I renew. Would prefer to see it in writing. But as we get heaps of other holidays I am not terribly worried right now.
I have classes of 35-40 and I also teach at one school with only 12 in one class. I teach at 4 different schools so the week goes fast.
And at the home school I have after school classes and for some kids I think I do actually teach them something!
But where I only see the kids once a fortnight..hey , we play games.

Holiday v money? right now money...I spent too much on my last holiday!! See, trouble is, you can't have one without the other Confused

Depends on what you're here for. If you are here to say money, earning 1.8, with 16 weeks vacation might not be so ideal. Not only are you earning less but the 16 weeks vacation is going to suck up your money like nothing else.

2.3, with only 2 weeks vacation gives you a much smaller opportunity to spend that hard-earned cash.

As for me, I'd be happiest somewhere in the middle I think. Say 2.2 with 4 weeks vacation.
